Indiana Ice News Release
Coming in to Saturday night's road contest against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, the Indiana Ice were the proud owners of a franchise-record ten consecutive road wins in regulation.
When the Ice left Cedar Rapids following a 2-1 overtime loss, their record for road wins in regulation remained at ten, waiting for another road game to decide its fate.
The contest between Indiana and Cedar Rapids was the fifth and final match in a string of road games for the Ice. The matchup was a hard-fought, gritty affair that saw each team post a single goal in regulation before meeting in overtime. In the end, it was RoughRider Frederk Tiffels who slipped the overtime game winner past Indiana netminder Jason Pawloski.
The first period proved fruitless and frustrating for Indiana and Cedar Rapids. Despite power play opportunities for both teams, no one could capitalize on the man advantage, and the game remained tied 0-0 going into the first intermission.
When the second stanza began, the Ice and RoughRiders once again grappled to be the first to find the back of the net. After one possible Indiana goal was waved off as the result of a hand pass, Indy finally broke the stalemate at 18:05.
Indiana's lone goal came in the form of a snipe from Jason Salvaggio, who pushed the puck past Cedar Rapids netminder Chris Birdsall. Denis Smirnov and Alex Talcott received helper's credit on the goal, Salvaggio's eleventh of the season.
Cedar Rapids snatched the lead from Indiana at 9:25 in the final frame of regulation when Judd Peterson pushed the puck past Ice goaltender Pawloski to make things even at 1-1. The battle for the win resumed, but when the horn sounded at the end of regulation, the teams remained tied with one goal apiece.
When play resumed in overtime, the wrist shot from Tiffels at at 4:18 sealed the OT victory for Cedar Rapids and handed the loss to Indiana. Despite falling in overtime, Indiana netminder Pawloski stopped 23 of 25 shots faced and now holds a record of 19-4-5.
Indiana received one point in the standings following Saturday night's contest. Indy remains atop the Eastern Conference standings with 52 points in 35 games played.
The Ice return to Indianapolis on Thursday, January 30 to host Team USA at Pan Am Pavilion for "College Night" at 7:05 PM. College students with a valid college ID are eligible for special $5 admission and $1 beer prices. Must present a valid college ID to receive discount.
