DENVER - Riding high after winning two of its last three games, the rejuvenated and new-look Colorado Mammoth heads to Alberta for a weekend doubleheader to take on the Calgary Roughnecks (Friday) and Edmonton Rush (Saturday). The Mammoth can clinch the fourth and final playoff spot in the West Division if it wins both games.
Colorado split last weekend's home-and-home series against the Rush, winning the back-end on Saturday night at Pepsi Center. In the 7-6 victory, Mammoth goalie Chris Levis led the way and was named the game's most valuable player by stopping 34 of the 40 shots-on-goal he faced. Colorado forward John Grant Jr. recorded six goals and four assists in the two game split. In the 4th quarter of Saturday's contest, he scored two goals and assisted on Jed Prossner's game-winner with 1:36 remaining. Grant was named the NLL Overall Player of the Week for his efforts in what was a must-win.
"The home crowd has been like an extra man in our last two home victories," said Mammoth Head Coach Bob Hamley. "What an incredible atmosphere for our team, and our guys are thrilled to give them two exciting wins!"
Now Hamley's team faces the tough task of winning on the road. In Colorado's lone meeting this season with the Roughnecks, the Mammoth eked out an 8-7 victory at Scotiabank Saddledome in January by netting the game-winner with less than three seconds left in regulation. Colorado dropped a 14-10 decision to the Rush at Rexall Place last Friday. Hamley said his team understands and is ready for the challenge it faces this weekend.
"We are preparing hard for our trip to Alberta knowing that we have to be at our best to compete with both teams."
But, explained the coach, the focus will be devoted exclusively to Friday's foe, the West Division regular-season champion Calgary Roughnecks, until after the game.
Both games will be broadcast live online on the NLL Network and will be rebroadcast on television next week on Altitude Sports and Entertainment.
The Mammoth's final regular-season home game of the year on HealthONE Field at Pepsi Center is next Friday, April 15 at 7pm MDT against the Calgary Roughnecks on Fan Appreciation Night. It's a Mammoth Party Pack Night. Get four tickets, four beers or sodas, and four hot dogs for just $39.
