A Four Spot in the Ninth Proves Costly for the Jackals
July 31, 2020 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
The Jackals dropped their first game of the season as they fell to the Jersey Wise Guys by a score of 6-2. Outstanding pitching by both Justin Valdespina and Nick Carrell paved the way for an exciting opening and middle third of baseball. The Jersey Wise Guys opened up the scoring with smart baserunning decisions by William Salas and Tucker Nathans as they both stole second and third base respectively in the third inning. T.J. Ward drove in Salas after hitting a sac-fly to right field. Wise Guys also tacked on another run after Joe DeLuca's RBI double scoring Andrew Don in the fourth. Justin Valdespina went 4 1/3 innings with three strikeouts, two hits and one run.
For the Jackals, they needed the fifth inning to put up their first run as Mike Howard came in to score after a Demetrius Moorer RBI single. A seventh inning sac-fly RBI from Moorer had tied the game, driving in Howard again as they got to relief pitcher Yelmison Peralta. Starter Nick Carrell went five innings with eight strikeouts, walking three batters, giving up five hits and two runs.
As the innings progressed, relief pitchers kept shutting the door at a chance for each team to take a late lead. They proved worthy for the Wise Guys as they notched a four run top of the ninth to get through Kyle Chavez as the Jackals couldn't push for a late rally as pitcher Matt Dallas came in to end the game with three strikeouts.
For the Wise Guys, Tucker Nathans went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs and a stolen base. And for the Jackals, Demetrius Moorer went 2 for 5 with 2 RBIs.
Jackals fall to 3-1 as the Wise Guys go to 2-3 on the season. The Jackals' next matchup is against the New York Brave at Yogi Berra Stadium on Friday July, 31st. First pitch is approximately at 7:05 PM.
