Alex Carder was well on his way with the 2012 Western Michigan Broncos - Manning Award candidate, Unitas Golden Arm Award Candidate, Davey O'Brien Award candidate, Senior Bowl candidate, and Walter Camp Player of the Year candidate. WMU was beating UConn to go 2-2 on the year when Alex's season was interrupted with an injury to the middle finger on his throwing hand. A pin was inserted, and Alex pushed back to get in to the final 2 Bronco games, trying to get the team bowl eligible. He wasn't quite able to get the wins but he finished out the season having the 3rd most career passing yards at WMU.
The NFL showed significant interest in the prolific passer. Alex talked to and worked out for several teams, before being signed by the Detroit Lions. When you haven't had a chance in game action, the cycle of life in the NFL can get you overlooked for someone else that might have had a chance to show something more than promise. Other teams took a look at Alex, even as late as December 17th of last year with the Green Bay Packers.
The Venom are looking for the 6'2, 215 pound triggerman to produce in the form he showed with the Broncos when he set the single season record for passing yards, tied the record for most 300yd passing games in a season (7), set WMU bowl records for pass completions (31), attempts (57), yards (439), and TDs (3), and threw for a program record 548 yds and WMU/MAC record seven TDs at Toledo (11/8) in his 2011 season. He completed nearly 66% of his passes in 2011, for 31 TDs.
The NFL scouting report on Alex indicated he had desirable mobility, toughness and the intangibles and intelligence to efficiently run a movement-style offense. Based on the NFL scout, the Venom anticipate Alex will show he is accurate in short to intermediate passes, possess anticipation and the tight spiral needed to hit seams, outs, and crosses. Plus his mobility should enable more than just first downs with his feet. Alex is a tough competitor, a leader, and is willing to stay in the pocket and complete the pass even if the face of the rush. Also, Alex has shown he can read what the defense is giving him and check-down when needed.
Expect more NFL interest next June, when Alex has game action to demonstrate his ability.
