San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The SaberCats announced today that they have been assigned former Chicago Bears wide receiver Rashied Davis on a one-year contract. Davis previously played in San Jose for the SaberCats from 2002-05.
"Rashied will add a dimension of speed to our offense that we have been looking for," said Owner/Head Coach Darren Arbet. "He knows this offense, has a lot of experience both here, as well as in the NFL and bringing him aboard is huge for us."
Davis (5-10, 185, San Jose State) is an eight-year National Football League veteran who spent six years (2005-2010) with the Chicago Bears and one with the Detroit Lions in 2011. He has appeared in 103 games throughout his career, catching 92 passes for 1,095 yards and five touchdowns. Davis was a key fixture on special teams as a return man, as well as part of the kick coverage teams. He returned for a second stint with the Bears in 2012, where he spent the preseason with the team.
Prior to his time in the NFL, Davis was a two-time ArenaBowl champion with the SaberCats, and was in San Jose from 2002-05. His most productive season came as a wide receiver in 2005, when he hauled in 100 catches for 1,420 yards and 30 touchdowns. He also scored eight times on the ground and led the team in kick returns, averaging 25.2 yards per return with an eye-popping six scores. He earned the team's Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2005. Throughout his AFL career, Davis caught 162 passes for 2,083 yards and 35 touchdowns as a receiver, scored 11 times on the ground, found the end zone ten times via the kick return and posted five interceptions as a defensive back. The former San Jose State Spartan was a part of two ArenaBowl teams, in 2002 as a member of the SaberCats practice squad, and again in 2004 as a key contributor.
The Granada Hills, Calif. native played his college football for San Jose State University from 2001-02 after transferring from West Los Angeles Community College, where he played his first snap of organized football. As a senior at San Jose State, Davis was moved to defensive back, appearing in 12 games and totaled 26 tackles with a pair of interceptions. In his junior campaign, his first as a Spartan, Davis led the team with 40 catches for 785 yards and six touchdowns. He was also a significant special teams player in the return game both at San Jose State and West Los Angeles Community College.
