San Diego Sockers News Release

ALLEN, TX--Shaun David's golden goal with 12:12 remaining in sudden death overtime gave the Dallas Sidekicks a 6-5 victory over the San Diego Sockers, snapping the Sockers' U.S. professional sports-record winning streak at 48 games. The Sockers never led the Sidekicks (10-2) in a spirited and physical affair in front of 4,701 at the Allen Event Center, but tied the game in dramatic fashion on Kraig Chiles' goal with six seconds remaining in regulation.

"All great things must come to an end," said Sockers head coach Phil Salvagio, "The Sidekicks played a great game and they got the result. We'll get a chance to answer back on our home field on Friday."

The overtime period saw San Diego get the first chance on goal, but after team captain Aaron Susi was stopped point blank by Dallas keeper Sagu, the Brazilian veteran threw a perfect outlet pass to David, who got behind the defense and rolled home the golden goal, his eighth of the season and second of the night.

The Sockers (11-1) trailed the Sidekicks 2-0 after the opening fifteen minutes of play but rallied to tie the score by halftime on Chiles' 42nd goal of the year and an equalizer from Anthony Medina. Sidekicks striker Jamie Lovegrove, who was the man of the match with four goals, put Dallas back ahead with back-to-back tallies in the opening two minutes of the third quarter. SDSU rookie Raymundo Reza answered back with a pair of quick scores to even the game at four, but Lovegrove's fourth of the game, on a defensive giveaway at midfield, put Dallas ahead 5-4 after forty-five minutes.

A contentious and physical fourth quarter saw both sides disagreeing with the officials' whistle, as each team was hit with a red card. The Sockers went to six attackers with 2:35 remaining but were unable to penetrate the Dallas defense. In the final fifteen seconds of regulation, Susi (wearing the goalie's jersey as sixth attacker) made a near post save and threw an outlet to Chiky Luna, who tipped to Brian Farber running the field with ten seconds left. Farber fed Chiles for a diagonal shot goal with 6.7 seconds remaining to touch off a raucous celebration in front of the San Diego bench. Regulation was another matter as the Sockers saw not only their overall win streak, but also a 35-game PASL regular season and 20-game road winning streak halted on the David golden goal.

The Sockers and Sidekicks will meet again on Friday, February 1st at the Valley View Casino Center with a 7:35pm scheduled kickoff. Tickets are available at (866) 799-GOAL and online via TicketMaster at sdsockers.com.
