Fort Lauderdale Strikers News Release
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Jan. 24, 2013) - After addressing the attacking side of the field earlier this offseason, the Fort Lauderdale Strikers have now made a move to strengthen the defense by signing former Honduran national team player and MLS defender Ivan Guerrero for the 2013 season. Guerrero played on the same Chicago Fire team with current Strikers forward Andy Herron and then assistant coach, Daryl Shore.
"We are super excited to be adding Ivan to our roster," said Strikers head coach Daryl Shore. "He brings a wealth of professional experience, ranging from the Honduran national team to the numerous professional clubs he has played for around the world. I had the chance to coach him when he was on our roster in Chicago and I know he will bring a leadership role on the field and in the locker room."
Guerrero, 35, began his professional career in 1996 with Club Deportivo Motagua of the first division of Honduran soccer. He subsequently spent time with England's Coventry City and Uruguayan side Club Atlético Peñarol before moving to the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer for 2005. Guerrero was the Fire's 2005 MLS All-Star representative and team MVP. After three seasons in Chicago, Guerrero spent 2008 playing first for the San Jose Earthquakes and later D.C. United.
"I am thankful to the Strikers for the opportunity and for their confidence in me," said Guerrero through a translator. "I hope my experience and ability will allow me to be a dynamic player for the team. I'm very motivated to join the team and compete every day."
Guerrero has also had 84 caps with the Honduran national team between 1999 and 2010, scoring four goals. He competed in 33 FIFA World Cup qualification matches for the Honduran national team and played in three CONCACAF Gold Cups in 2000, 2005 and 2007.
