Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks announced Wednesday the Central Hockey League (CHL) team has signed goaltender Charlie Effinger and defenseman Zach Carriveau. Effinger returns to the Mavericks after playing with Missouri during the team's inaugural season and Carriveau has signed with the Mavericks for his rookie season.
"Charlie coming back is definitely something we are excited about," said Mavericks' President and General Manager Brent Thiessen. "We never wanted to lose a guy like Charlie when he left last season so to bring him back again is exciting for everyone. We know what he can do and he is a familiar face for our fans. It will be a great competition during training camp for the top goaltending spot."
"Carriveau is a young player that Scott (Hillman) did a great job in getting him to Missouri," added Thiessen. "We are excited to see him in training camp and hopefully add to the depth of our blueline."
Effinger, 25 (11/23/85), returns to the Mavericks after playing last season with the Newcastle Vipers in the ELITE Ice Hockey League (EIHL) in the United Kingdom. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound goaltender played in 56 games last season with the Vipers, and accumulated more minutes in net (3,186) than he had in his previous two seasons as a pro.
Prior to playing for Newcastle, the Belleville, Illinois native finished the 2009-10 season with the Mavericks where he helped lead the team to the second round of the playoffs. Through a trade with the Allen Americans, Effinger joined the Mavericks in February of 2010 and won eight of his first nine games. He finished with a 9-3-1 record, 2.68 goals-against average (GAA) and .913 save percentage with the Mavericks. In total, Effinger has a 17-6-2 record, 2.51 GAA and .917 save percentage in 27 games in the CHL.
Effinger played his rookie season in the ECHL primarily with the Trenton Devils where he had a 9-8-2 record, 2.93 GAA and .902 save percentage. Prior to playing professionally, Effinger played four seasons with the Miami University Redhawks (Ohio). In 53 games with Miami, he finished with a 32-14-4 record.
"Charlie is an elite goaltender in the CHL," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "Without Charlie's brilliant play, we would not have made the playoffs in season one. I believe he is the right goaltender to help lead us to where we want to go this season. He is a very hard working player and a great team guy, and we are very excited to have him back with the Mavericks this season as one of the three goalies we will have in camp this October."
Carriveau, 21 (8/6/90), enters his rookie season with the Mavericks. The Portland, Maine native played the previous three seasons of Junior A hockey with the Nepean Raiders of the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL). A 6-foot, 185-pound defenseman, Carriveau had his best season last year in which he had 50 points (18-3250) and 97 penalty minutes in 61 games played. In total, Carriveau had 31 goals, 89 assists and 239 penalty minutes in 175 games played during his three seasons with the Raiders.
"Zach is a very exciting young player," said Hillman of his latest signing. "He will likely be the only player trying to make the jump this fall from Tier II junior hockey in Canada to the Central Hockey League. He comes in with the right attitude and is very excited to show everyone that he can contribute in the professional game. Zach moves the puck very well and has a nice offensive touch. I am anxious to see how well he competes as one of the youngest players in our camp."
The Missouri Mavericks will begin their third season in the Central Hockey League in October, and the home opener is Saturday, November 5 against the Wichita Thunder. The Mavericks play their home games at the state-of-the-art Independence Events Center where parking is always free. Tickets for all regular season games go on sale on Saturday, September 17 at 10 a.m. Call (816) 252-7825 for more information or visit www.MissouriMavericks.com .
