Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

FORT MYERS, FL (August 31, 2009)- Florida State League President Chuck Murphy announced today that Fort Myers Miracle pitcher David Bromberg has been named the 2009 Florida State League Post-Season Pitcher of the Year. Miracle manager Jeff Smith was honored as the FSL's Manager of Year.

The Miracle captured the South Division's first-half title and currently lead Charlotte by 3 ½ games with six games to play for the second-half title.

The Florida State League Post-Season All-Star team also features Miracle first baseman Chris Parmelee and outfielder Ben Revere. Bromberg was selected as one of the four starting pitchers.

The team features the League's best players at every position. The prestigious team is selected annually by vote of the FSL's Managers, Official Scorers and club Sports Writers representing the 12 teams in the League.

Bromberg, a 32nd round draft pick of the Minnesota Twins in the 2005 MLB Draft, recently tied the club's mark for single-season victories with 13. He is 13-3 with a 2.61 ERA (4th in FSL). The Los Angles native leads the league in strikeouts (141 in 148 1/3 innings) and was also the starter for the South Division in the Florida State League All-Star Game in June at Hammond Stadium.

"The hard work that I put in paid off. I owe a lot of this season to Steve Mintz (Miracle pitching coach) and Smitty (Miracle manager Jeff Smith). Plus, we couldn't have the season we are having without the great team that is out their behind me," said Bromberg.

The 21-year old was at his best during a complete game, 7-0, shutout against Charlotte on Friday, August 7.

"My curveball in the bullpen wasn't working, but Mintzy (Steve Mintz) said to stay with it and that night it worked and it seemed like everything I threw just fell right off the table," said Bromberg.

Parmelee used his Florida State League All-Star Home Run Derby title as a springboard for a solid second half. The former 2006 first-round pick of the Twins leads the Miracle with 16 home runs (tied for second in league) and 72 RBI (second in league).

The Miracle have been paced atop the order all season long by the speedy Revere. The Twins selected him with their first pick in the 2007 MLB Draft and have watched him excel for three straight years.

Revere is second in the league in batting with a .306 batting average and has swiped 44 bases. His 136 hits in 115 games are second behind St. Lucie outfielder Carlos Guzman's 137.

"This is a huge honor for these players. All three guys have worked hard and stayed healthy and stayed consistent. They are a big part of why this team has had an outstanding season," said Smith.

Smith's Manager of the Year honor comes on the heels of being named a 2008 Florida State League Post-Season Coach. The second year manager has compiled a 156-112 mark with the Miracle. The .582 winning percentage is the highest in the club's 18-year history.

"The league award is really a team and staff award. My staff with Steve Mintz, Jim Dwyer (hitting coach), Larry Bennese (trainer) and Mike MacDonald (strength coach) has been great to work with and the team has worked hard all year to get better and it shows on the field," said Smith, who will lead the Miracle into the post-season for the second straight season.

The Miracle, 79-53 overall, have a chance during the final six games of the regular season to set the club mark for most wins in a season. The 2000 Miracle finished 83-57 under the direction of Jose Marzan.

Tampa's Austin Romine was named the Most Valuable Player.
