Topeka Pilots News Release
TOPEKA, KS, AUGUST 21, 2009: Topeka RoadRunners defenseman Kevin Ryan has inked an agreement to play hockey for the Niagara University Purple Eagles.
Ryan was raised in a rink, starting on a house team at the age of 6 in upstate New York near Buffalo. He soon joined a travel team and eventually played prep school hockey for St. Francis HS. He attended a few Midget showcases and was eventually signed by the Waterloo Black Hawks (USHL). He broke his wrist early in his first season of juniors, and upon returning to Waterloo after the Christmas break, he was stunned to find shortly thereafter he'd been traded to Topeka. "It threw me a little at first, but when I got to Topeka I found it be a lot like my hometown and I felt very comfortable here." He played in 12 games and then another 8 in the postseason, posting 3 assists and a +6 rating. The loss to St. Louis in the Division Finals was obviously disappointing. "Yeah, I was upset for a little while, but you know what? Summer is short, and you have to shake it off and prepare for the next season", he said. "If you use it for motivation, that's fine. But you can't dwell on it."
Ryan had generated a bit of college interest with his reliable play on the blue line and ability to rush the puck without sacrificing his defensive obligations. He had been on a few official visits to Division I campuses but nothing had shown itself to be irresistible. But when Niagara University contacted him again, everything fell into place. "Everything is just perfect. The academics, the campus, it's 45 minutes from home." It was the coaching staff that sealed the deal for Ryan. "The coaches there are over-the-top. I'm happy that I will get a chance to play there."
First things first, though. The college deal calls for Ryan to start play in Fall 2010, leaving him free to skate one more season for Topeka. "I worked hard this summer to prepare. I've put on 10-15 lbs. of good weight, and I'm in better shape than I was going into last season", he said. He plans on majoring in Business with a minor in biological chemistry so that he may continue in to medical school. Yet, given the chance, he will play hockey as long as he can. "I would love to play pro hockey in Europe, just for the unbelievable experience."
Niagara University is competing in the CHA, and will be moving into the Atlantic Hockey Association next season.
