GREENVILLE, S.C., February 28 â The Charlotte Bobcats have signed Roanoke Dazzle point guard Cory Alexander, making him the eighth GATORADE Call-Up of the National Basketball Development League season and the third in seven days, all from the Dazzle.
Alexander is the 47th overall GATORADE Call-Up spread over 34 players since the NBDL began play in November 2001. This is the fourth NBDL-to-NBA promotion this season for the league-leading Dazzle. Shooting guard Matt Carroll signed with the Bobcats on February 23 and forward James Thomas signed a 10-day deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers on February 22, but has since returned to Roanoke. Thomas also played with the Trail Blazers earlier this season.
Tied for the NBDL lead in steals (2.2 pg) and second in assists (8.3 pg), Alexander has played in and started 32 games for Roanoke this season. He is third in the league in scoring at 16.4 points per game and among league leaders in minutes played per game at 34.6 and free throw percentage at .828 (154-186).
A six-year veteran of the NBA, playing for the Spurs, Nuggets and Magic, Alexander was selected by the San Antonio Spurs in the first round (29th pick overall) of the 1995 NBA Draft. He has played in 291 career NBA games, averaging 5.6 points, 2.7 assists and 1.5 rebounds. In 82 career NBDL games, all for Roanoke, he averaged 16.5 points, 6.9 assists and 3.9 rebounds. His 306 assists in 2002-03 is an NBDL single-season record.
