Stealth routs Blizzard

A lot happens in eight days. Monday, March 17, the Houston Stealth and the Grand Rapids Blizzard competed in a hard fought, track meet which Houston 98 to 89. Fast forward to Tuesday, March 25, Houston routed the Blizzard 98 to 81. Grand Rapids was playing its final game of an 11-day road trip tonight; and, the weariness showed from the opening tip.

"We came out lacking intensity, passion, determination, and fire," said Grand Rapids head coach Ozell Wells. "When youre on the road as long as this one has been, you still have to bring it (effort) every game."

The Stealth started the game scoring the first ten points.

Grand Rapids awakened from its collective slumber to tie the game at 14 with 12:56 left in the first half.

Over the next nine minutes, the game was tied six more times with the final tie at 30 with 3:31 remaining in the first period.

Grand Rapids swing player Stacey Thomas scored 9 of the thirty while teammate Maxann Reese added 7.

Houston's Tina Thompson and Michelle each scored 8 during the stretch.

The Stealth ended the first half with a 16-2 run and took a 46 to32 lead into the locker room.

"From the time we played Grand Rapids (last week) and now," said Stealth head coach John Chancellor. "In the course of a week, we've changed our mind-set about what we're doing defensively."

Houston began the second half with a 9-2 run and build its lead to 23 points (57-34) with 16:45 remaining the game. The Blizzard never threatened after the run.

Coach Chancellor emptied his bench; and, despite a few sloppy spells, the Stealth increased its lead to as much as 29 points (78-49). The closest Grand Rapids was able to get in the second half was the final score 98-81.

Houston shot 54.9% (39 for 73 from the field) for the game while Grand Rapids shot 39.2% (29 for 74). The Stealth dished out 29 assists in the game.

Sheryl Swoopes was the game's high-scorer with 21 points. Tina Thompson added 20 and Michelle Snow scored 19 for Houston.

Maxann Reese led Grand Rapids in scoring with 20 points followed by Stacey Thomas and Elaine Powell's 17 points each.

Houston's record improves to 8-9 with the victory while Grand Rapids' record falls to 6-9.

The Stealth travels to Tennessee to face the Fury on Thursday, March 27; then, the Stealth heads to Birmingham to square off versus the Power on Saturday, March 29. Houston's final game of the regular season will be Tuesday, April 1, at home versus the Chicago Blaze. The game will be played at the University of Houston's Hofheinz Pavilion.
