November 24, 2009 - Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release
TORONTO -- Four ofCanada's most powerful voices will deliver one of the most powerful moments in Canadian sport: the Canadian Tenors are singing the national anthem at the Grey Cup.
"We're thrilled that one of our country's leading talents, the Canadian Tenors, will grace our league's biggest stage for the singing of O Canada," said Mark Cohon, Commissioner of the Canadian Football League.
"It might be a good thing McMahon Stadium inCalgary isn't a domed stadium, because these incredible young men, with thousands of proud Canadians in the stands signing with them, might just blow a roof right off."
The 97th Grey Cup will be played Sunday, November 29th, before a sold out crowd of more than 46,000 and millions of Canadians watching on TSN. The anthem will precede the kickoff of Canadian football's national championship game, which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. eastern time.
The Canadian Tenors will also perform earlier that day for 250 invited guests at the Commissioner's Game Day Brunch, presented by the Canadian Football League and Purolator, the official courier of the CFL.
Since the Canadian Tenors' debut in 2007, the music of Port McNeil's Clifton Murray,Toronto's Victor Micallef,Ottawa's Remigio Pereira andVancouver's Fraser Walters has wowed Canadians and made the group one of our country's most sought after exports.
The group's self-titled first album, featuring classic songs along with romantic operatic arrangements such asBecause We Believe, has gone gold in Canada and is being released around the world by Universal Music and its affiliates.
The Canadian Tenors' unique repertoire is sung not only in English and French but also in Spanish and Italian, reflecting their multicultural heritage as well as Canada's diversity. Featuring unique vocal styles and undeniable charm, they have criss-crossed the globe, fromToronto to Tahiti, andVancouver toVienna, performing more than 150 concerts and thrilling thousands of music lovers.
Together, the foursome has shared the stage with such luminaries as former President Bill Clinton, music legend Quincy Jones, Grammy Award winner Wyclef Jean andCanada's musical maestro David Foster. They have performed with renowned Tuscan tenor Andrew Bocelli in Tel Aviv,Israel.
