Yankees edge Astros, 2-1, in 13 innings

Pulaski, VA - The Greeneville Astros (25-21) and Pulaski Yankees (21-22) battled through 12 scoreless innings on Tuesday night before the Yankees prevailed, 2-1, in the 13th inning. With the loss, the Astros fell into a tie with the Johnson City Cardinals for first place in the Appalachian League West Division.

After being unable to take advantage of runners in scoring position most of the night, the Astros scored the first run of the game in the top of the 13 th inning. Luis Payano got the inning started with a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a Stijn van der Meer bunt single combined with a Yankees throwing error. Payano then scored when Raymond Henderson reached on a fielding error to put the Astros on top, 1-0.

The Astros pitching staff, which leads the Appalachian League with a 3.58 team ERA, held the Yankees scoreless for 21 and one-third consecutive innings dating back to Monday night's shutout. However, the streak came to a halt in the bottom of the 13th inning.

After a pop out to start the inning, the Astros were two outs away from victory. Then, back-to-back singles put Yankees runners at the corners before a Leonardo Molina RBI single tied the game. Then, with runners at first and second with two outs, Oswaldo Cabrera hit a line drive RBI single into right field to win the game for Pulaski.

The Astros pitchers combined to strike out 17 batters, raising their total to a league-best 426 strikeouts. Starting pitcher Cristian Javier went five scoreless innings while striking out eight. He gave way to lefty Ben Smith in the sixth, and he totaled five strikeouts through three innings. Then Devon Carr entered in the ninth, pitched three innings, and struck out four.

Yankees' reliever Phillip Diehl picked up the win after going the final three innings and allowing just one unearned run.

The Astros return home on Wednesday as they begin a three-game series with the Cardinals to determine the division leader. The game one starter for the Astros will be Jorge Guzman. First pitch will take place at 7:00pm.
