Greeneville Astros News Release
Kingsport, TN - The Greeneville Astros (29-28) scored five runs in the fourth inning to help carry them past the Kingsport Mets (31-28), 7-4, on Tuesday night at Hunter Wright Stadium. With their second straight road win, the Astros clinched the season series over the Mets, 6-5.
With nine games left in the regular season, the standings in the Appalachian League West now show the Astros are just one game behind both the Mets and the Johnson City Cardinals (31-28) for the final playoff spot. Meanwhile, they only trail the division-leading Elizabethton Twins (32-26) by two-and-a-half games.
Starting off the game on Tuesday, both teams were held scoreless through the first two-and-a-half innings before the Mets took the initial lead. In the bottom of the third, Vicente Lupo gave them their first run on a RBI single. Then, with runners at first and second, an Astros throwing error while attempting to get a double play allowed the lead runner to score and put the Mets up, 2-0.
In the top of the fourth, the Astros answered with their biggest inning of the night. First, Ydarqui Marte knocked in their initial run with a single to centerfield that was misplayed by the Mets to allow a run to score from second. Then, Bryan Muniz crushed a two-run homer (2) to left field to give the Astros the lead. Finally, with runners at second and third with two outs, Edwin Medina hit a ground ball single to score both runners and put the Astros up, 5-2.
That set the tone for the rest of the game. In the fifth inning, Muniz came back around for the Astros and added a RBI single. Then, following a Zach Mathieu two-run double for the Mets, Marte added one final score for the Astros on a RBI double in the ninth.
Marte, Muniz and Medina all finished the night going two-for-four at the plate for the Astros. Meanwhile, Yonathan Mejia paced the club by going three-for-five.
Astros' starting pitcher, left-hander Austin Nicely, allowed one earned run on six hits over four innings with four strikeouts. Meanwhile, the winning pitcher was reliever Zach Davis, who entered the game in the sixth and completed three scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out four. Then, Eric Peterson came on in the ninth and retired the side in order to pick up his team-leading fifth save.
Following the final league-wide off day of the season on Wednesday, the Astros will travel to Princeton to face the Rays in a three-game series set to begin on Thursday night. Game time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
