2014 Football Reporters of Canada Hall of Fame Inductees Announced

Published on November 6, 2014 under Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release

The Football Reporters of Canada are pleased to announce that Chris Cuthbert, Lowell Ullrich and Mike Beamish are this yearʼs inductees into the media wing of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.

Cuthbert, currently the lead play-by-play announcer for CFL on TSN, has spent 30 years as a radio and television sportscaster. He previously worked for CBC-TV, CJAD Radio in Montreal and CFRC Radio in Kingston. Known primarily for his football and hockey broadcasts, Cuthbert called the "Golden Goal" for TSN when the Canadian menʼs hockey team won its gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. He is about to call his 16th Grey Cup on November 30.

Ullrich, based in Vancouver, has been a sports writer with the Province since 1979. He began covering the CFLʼs B.C. Lions as the newspaperʼs beat writer in 1999. Ullrich has also covered Triple-A baseball, Whitecaps soccer and Grizzlies basketball. He was selected by his FRC peers as the Reporter of the Year in 2011 and - known for his thoroughness - he continues writing, blogging, tweeting and posting online videos to keep everyone updated about the Lions.

Beamish has covered the Lions for the Vancouver Sun for 15 seasons but his CFL memories date back to watching his hometown Toronto Argonauts lose the 1971 Grey Cup, then winning the 1983 championship at B.C. Place Stadium. Beamishʼs unique writing style injects personality into each story and, in addition to writing about every sport contested in the Lower Mainland, since 1984 he has been dispatched by the Sun to cover numerous Olympic Games.

Induction ceremonies take place Sunday, November 30, during an FRC brunch at The Sutton Place Hotel in downtown Vancouver. Past inductees are listed at the Canadian Football Hall of Fameʼs website (www.cfhof.ca).
