2014 Florida Marine Raiders Recap

August 5, 2014 - X-League (X-League) - Florida Marine Raiders News Release

(Lakeland, FL) | The Florida Marine Raiders entered the 2014 season with a fresh start in a new league with a new name. The Raiders had lost in the semi-finals in each of their two previous seasons. This hungry team had set their sights on one goal, a Championship. The season began at home against the Steam and the Raiders confidently rolled through them to a 70-40 victory. The next challenge was a trip to Georgia to face the Rampage, but again won convincingly. The team was excited to get off to a 2-0 start and had aspirations of a home Championship Game. The only thing standing in their way was a three game gauntlet that included a home and away game against the Attack and a home game against the dangerous Alabama Outlawz. The Raiders struggled with injuries and inconsistent play, which led to a 0-3 hole after their hot start. With the Attack and Outlawz dominating the league the Raiders playoff hopes seemed bleak, but the night is darkest before the dawn. The Marine Raiders would rise from the ashes like a phoenix and attempt an unlikely comeback to save their season. After the Outlawz fell to the undefeated St. Louis Attack the final spot in the playoffs came down to a rematch against the Outlawz in Birmingham, Alabama. After a hard fought battle the Raider run game proved victorious leaving them one victory away from a trip to St. Louis for the X-Bowl.

After a 75-23 home victory against the Rampage the Raiders set their focus on the still undefeated St. Louis Attack. After two heartbreaking losses to the Attack, the Raiders were motivated to learn from their mistakes and finally beat the Attack. St. Louis would get out to a quick 10-0 start, but after curious decision making the Raiders were able to make a 24-0 run and maintain a safe lead. The Attack put a scare into the Raiders by marching within 5 yards of the End zone with 46 seconds left. Josh Smith saved the day by recovering a fumble and returning it almost 50 yards for the game sealing Defensive Score. The 2014 Florida Marine Raiders are now Champions and Head Coach Michael Mink delivered his long awaited title in honor of his late mother. Though this Championship will be celebrated throughout the city of Lakeland, FL and Polk County the invasion is coming in 2015. The Marine Raiders will look forward to defending the X-League Championship title and repeat in 2015.
