2010-11 Regular Season Recap
March 22, 2011 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release
The 2010-11 regular season has come to an end, and what a regular season it was! The Lewiston MAINEiacs put together their second best regular season in franchise history, posting a 40-24-1-3 record (85 points).
The campaign started with a bang, as the MAINEiacs romped the Rimouski Oceanic 8-3 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. Etienne Brodeur scored the first two goals of the year in a matter of just 1:52, while Cameron Critchlow netted the first of four hat tricks by the team this season (Brodeur had the other three, including two in back-to-back January games).
After a mediocre 2-3-0-2 record in September, Lewiston exploded in October and November, going 19-5-0-0, including a ten-game winning streak from October 23rd through November 20th. Highlight games in those months were: a 7-2 win over Victoriaville on "Pink in the Rink" night October 8th, a 5-4 comeback win in Drummondville on October 29th, a dramatic 4-3 home win over eventual division champion Quebec on November 3rd, and a thrilling 3-2 shootout win over Moncton on Black Friday, which took place in front of a season-high crowd of 2,811. Lewiston also picked up four overtime wins during those months, knocking off Val-d'Or on October 3rd (Brodeur), Baie-Comeau on November 14th (Brodeur), Shawinigan on November 20th (Dame-Malka), and Cape Breton on November 30th (Evans-Renaud).
The MAINEiacs slowed down a tad in December, going 4-6-0-0 in ten games. However, one of the most notable wins of the year came in december, when Lewiston ended the Saint John Sea Dogs' ten-game winning streak, handing the Sea Dogs one of their seven regulation losses of the year. Nicholas Champion stood on his head, making 44 saves in the 5-2 triumph. Lewiston also picked up a pair of comeback wins in December, edging PEI 6-5 and Shawinigan 5-4.
January was another solid month for the lone QMJHL team in the United States, as the MAINEiacs went 8-2-0-0, with a 6-0 mark on home ice. The month started with four straight blowouts, as Drummondville (7-0), Rouyn-Noranda (6-1 & 6-2), and Halifax (9-3) felt Lewiston's wrath. The MAINEiacs finished the month with divisional wins over Rimouski (5-4) and Chicoutimi (5-2), erasing a 4-1 deficit to sink the Oceanic.
After a challenging 3-6-1-0 month of February, the MAINEiacs regained their steam in March, posting a 4-2-0-1 record, which including a 4-0-0-1 mark on the road. Lewiston earned five out of six possible points on a three games in three nights swing through Halifax and PEI, before sweeping a pair of games from Baie-Comeau and Chicoutimi to conclude the marathon.
From a statistical standpoint, Etienne Brodeur's performance this season will be remembered for quite some time. After scoring 18 goals in 2009-10, the 19-year old exploded, setting a new franchise record with 53 goals. Brodeur also added 30 assists, giving him a total of 83 points, which tied him with David Perron for the fifth most points in a single season. Brodeur achieved those numbers while playing in all 68 games, becoming just the second player (Pierre-Luc Faubert) to play in every regular season game in two separate years.
Michael Chaput finished second on the club in scoring, setting a career-high with 59 points in 62 games. Chaput was one of 13 non-rookies (Brodeur, Carrier, Critchlow, Dame-Malka, S. Fournier, Henley, Houde-Caron, Kabanov, Parisien, Saab, Shannon, Tanguy) to set career-highs in points.
On the blueline, Olivier Dame-Malka and Sam Carrier both eclipsed the 50-point plateau, as Dame-Malka recorded 16 goals, 39 assists, and 55 points in 64 games, while Carrier had 11 goals, 39 assists, and 50 points in 61 games. It is the first time since 2003-04 (Jonathan Paiement, Francis Trudel) that the MAINEiacs have had two defensemen with at least 50 points in the same season. Carrier was also a star in his own zone, joining with Sam Finn, as the two both surpassed David Perron's previous franchise record (plus-37) for the highest plus/minus in a season. Finn's plus-41 just beat out Carrier's plus-40.
In goal, Nicholas Champion also made it into the record books, as his 27 wins tied Jonathan Bernier for the most in franchise history in a single season. Champion went 27-11-3, with a 2.83 GAA, and an .897 Sv%, joining with Andrey Makarov for a formidable tandem between the pipes. Makarov went 11-12-2, with a 3.37 GAA, and an .890 Sv%. Both netminders blanked the opposition twice.
The MAINEiacs also had a strong rookie class, led by Dillon Fournier, who was selected first overall at the 2010 QMJHL Entry Draft. Fournier finished second on the team in rookie scoring, as he posted 14 points in 60 games. Lewiston's leading rookie was Cole Hawes, who found the back of the net ten times (16 total points), despite playing in only 40 games because of injury troubles. Alex Zafiris (14 points), Zach Evans-Renaud (12 points), and Christophe Lalonde (8 points) also chipped in from this year's rookie class. One rookie goalie saw action this season, as 16-year old Antoine Bibeau got the call to Lewiston for three games. Bibeau won both of his starts, stopping 53 of the 58 shots he faced.
With the regular season now behind them, the current group of 23 players is poised and ready for a long and strong postseason run. To stick with the motto of the season, the 40 wins is a great addition to the "Proud Past," and with the players mentioned above, the "Bright Future" will certainly be something to look forward to both during the playoffs, and in seasons to come. Enjoy the playoffs!!
