Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release

On Wednesday night, the Lewiston MAINEiacs held their eighth annual end of the regular season awards banquet at the Ramada during "THE HUNT IS ON" pep rally. Here are the players that took home hardware in 2010-11.

The Oxford Networks Regular Season Scoring Champion Award

#23 ETIENNE BRODEUR

Etienne Brodeur got his first point of the year just 26 seconds into the MAINEiacs' opening night win over Rimouski, and followed that up with a second point 1:26 later. Brodeur set the franchise record for goals in a single season, lighting the lamp 53 times in 68 games. The 19-year old also recorded 30 assists, giving him an overall total of 83 points, which is tied for the fifth highest single season total in franchise history.

The Federal Distributors Most Improved Player Award

#4 IAN SAAB

Ian Saab started the year in a three-player cycle to determine who would be in the lineup on a nightly basis. Saab suffered an injury in October, and when he returned healthy in November, the defenseman was immediately turning things around. By season's end, Ian found himself playing alongside of Sam Carrier on the team's top defensive pairing, when Sam Finn was out of the lineup. Saab's aggressive play saw improvement over the course of the season, as he quickly made himself a feared commodity on the blueline. The 18-year old finished the year with three goals, five assists, and eight points in 46 games.

The Country Kitchen/Lepage Bakeries Outstanding Community Involvement Award

#71 KIRILL KABANOV

Kirill Kabanov joined the MAINEiacs in October, but immediately made an impact with the fans in the community. Kirill visited a variety of schools and many community and special events. Whenever he was out of the lineup with an injury, he could be counted on to meet and shake hands with practically every fan in attendance that night. His outgoing personality and overall caring attitude for the people who come watch him play has earned Kirill this award.

The Androscoggin Bank Rookie of the Year Award

#2 DILLON FOURNIER

Dillon Fournier faced quite a bit of pressure this season, as he was selected as the first overall pick at the 2010 QMJHL Entry Draft in Drummondville. However, his talents, as well as his prior chemistry with his teammates made for a smooth transition into the league. For the first part of the season, Dillon was playing on the team's second defensive pairing, which is quite the compliment for a 16-year old. His first career goal came on October 1st, as Fournier went on to score three goals, 11 assists, and 14 points in 60 games as a rookie.

The Pepsi Bottling Group Regular Season Fan's Choice Award

#23 ETIENNE BRODEUR

This season was Etienne Brodeur's third season as a MAINEiac, and is one of only three current players who were on Lewiston's roster at the start of the 2008-09 season. MAINEiacs fans have watched Etienne grow and develop from a 10-goal scorer, to an 18-goal scorer, to this season's career high of 53 goals. When Brodeur netted his 50th goal of the season at home on March 13th, the Androscoggin Bank Colisee was filled with letter "E"s, as well as number "50"s, as fans showed their support of Etienne's impressive mark.

The City of Lewiston Outstanding Academic & Athletic Performance Award

#19 PIERRE-OLIVIER MORIN

Pierre-Olivier Morin joins Chad Denny, as the two players to win this award in consecutive seasons. On the ice this season, Morin continued to be one of the team's better offensive performers, registering 15 goals, 30 assists, and 45 points in 59 games after returning from Vancouver Canucks Training Camp. In the classroom, Morin was one of the organization's top scholars, running his total credit hours to 45.

The TD Bank Best Sportsmanship Award

#18 ALEX ZAFIRIS

Alex Zafiris made the MAINEiacs as a training camp invite, battling every step of the way to earn a spot on the team. Once making the squad, Zafiris appeared in 53 games, which meant that he had to make the best of a tough situation, finding himself in the stands on a few occasions. Alex never pouted, and whenever he got the call to take a shift on the ice, he did it with pride and elegance. Zafiris was only whistled for six penalties this season, spending just 15 minutes in the box. He also tallied two goals, 12 assists, and 14 points in his rookie campaign.

The Sam's Italian Food Top Defenseman Award

#55 SAM CARRIER

Sam Carrier joins Jonathan Paiement, as the two players that have won this award multiple times. Carrier's offensive talents made him a permanent staple on the team's power play, where he scored seven out of his eleven goals. The Washington Capitals draft pick also added 39 assists, giving him a grand total of 50 points in 61 games. Defensively, Sam Carrier joined with defensive partner Sam Finn to make for one of the most difficult pairings for the opposition to score against. Carrier's plus/minus ended up as the second best in franchise history at a remarkable +40.

The Emerson Auto Park/Rowe Ford Unsung Hero Award

#57 ANTOINE HOUDE-CARON

Antoine Houde-Caron was acquired by the MAINEiacs from the Shawinigan Cataractes at the draft. Lewiston acquired the forward, as they were in search of a 20-year old with experience, leadership, and skill. Antoine's leadership was evident right away, as he was given one of the club's alternate captains. Houde-Caron's experience and skill came into play on the ice, mainly on the penalty kill, where he helped to boost the team into the top half of the league in that category. The 20-year old netted three shorthanded goals, and ultimately finished the year with 16 goals, 25 assists, and 41 points in 64 games as a MAINEiac.

The Pat Tillman Trophy for the Most Inspirational Player

#6 SAM FINN

Sam Finn takes home this award for the second year in a row. At the beginning of the year, Finn was named as the team's alternate captain for games both at home and on the road. On the ice, Sam was a player that opposing forwards never liked to skate down on, as they knew that the end result wasn't going to be pretty. The 19-year old dropped the gloves seven times this season, but his most impressive statistic was a franchise record plus/minus rating of +41.
