2008 Mohawk Spina Goes 2 for 2 in AA All-Star Game
July 1, 2011 - Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL)
Amsterdam Mohawks News Release
2008 Amsterdam Mohawk third baseman and fan favorite Mike Spina had a memorable night earlier this week as he went 2 for 2 with two doubles and a walk in the AA Texas League All-Star Game played in San Antonio . The Oakland A's farmhand is now a first baseman and is the cleanup hitter for the A's affiliate in Midland, Texas. After a torrid start to the 2011 season, Mike is now hitting .258 with 10 homeruns, 16 doubles, and 50 RBI. In 2010, he hit .253 with 23 homeruns playing in Class A ball.
In 2008 for the Mohawks, Spina entertained fans all summer with his long homeruns out of Shuttleworth Park. He led the team to within one game of the NYCBL finals and hit .330 with 10 homeruns for the Mohawks on the season. At Cincinnati, the Newberry, FL native broke Boston Red Sox great Kevin Youklis' home run record blasting 21 in 2008 and another 23 in 2009. He was an 11th round pick by the A's in the 2009 draft.
The A's just recently demoted first baseman Daric Barton to the minor leagues and currently are using utility man Conor Jackson as their first baseman which makes it hopeful that Spina could become the second former Mohawk to reach the big leagues this season following the footsteps on 2006 Mohawk Cord Phelps (Stanford) who was called up by the Indians last month.
