2006 UIF Season in Review

Published on July 11, 2006 under United Indoor Football Association (UIF) News Release

The United Indoor Football league finished up their second season of existence with some of the best indoor football that has ever been witnessed. The Sioux Falls Storm were the 2005 United Bowl champions and came out of the gates with a target on their back. The Storm held their own and showed the UIF why they are the team to beat as they finished the regular season with the best record in UIF history with a 15-0 perfect season. Head Coach, Kurtiss Riggs becomes the UIF's leader in career wins with a 25 - 8 two season record in the new league. Terrance Bryant led the team as the starting quarterback for the second season and finished with the second best pass efficiency with a 106.1 rating.

The Storm did have some trouble getting their perfect year. In Week 5, the Ft. Wayne Freedom took the Storm to the edge of their closest loss of the season. The Freedom went into the only overtime game of the season (third in UIF history) with the Storm and lost 47-44 by a 20-yard field goal by UBI MVP, Adam Hicks. This win was one of five games that the Storm won by ten points or less during the 2006 season.

Taking the second seed in the post season this year is the Lexington Horsemen (13-2), who like always, is considered one of the best teams in all of indoor football year after year. In past years, the Horsemen have been led by quarterback, Dusty Bonner, who has now moved from the turf to the front office as the team's General Manager. Now a new crafty player takes Bonner's place, as Eddie Eviston led the league in pass efficiency (108.6) and threw for almost 2,500 yards on a 50-yard field.

The Horsemen's only two losses of the season came to our number three seed, the Rock River Raptors. The Raptors took the Horsemen once at home (62-43) and once at Rupp Arena (55-46). The Raptors finished with an 11-4 regular season record to win the Central Division. Rock River could face one of the two teams that beat them during the season. The West Division champions, Sioux Falls Storm, and the Omaha Beef (another West team) were the only two teams able to find a way to beat the Raptors, with each team taking two wins off the prehistoric team.

The Omaha Beef finished their season with five wins out of their last seven games. Andy Majors made a name for himself as a UIF quarterback as he started the last five games and took four wins to catapult the team right into the middle of the playoffs and give them home field advantage in the first round. The Beef tied a UIF record with the most points scored in one game, with a 75-34 victory over the Evansville BlueCats in Week 3. The Beef will welcome the BlueCats back for another rematch and chance for redemption for the Cats as they take the fifth seed in the playoffs.

Evansville finished the season as one of the hottest teams in the league. The BlueCats were on a franchise best, four game win streak as they hit the road on the final week to meet the undefeated, Sioux Falls Storm. The BlueCats proved to be one of the Storm's toughest competitors all season long as Evansville had the lead on three separate occasions and tied it once; only to lose by a score of 33-26 after Marques Smith rushed in for his last touchdown of the regular season and stamp the Storm as the best team in the UIF.

Finishing up the playoff picture was the Sioux City Bandits. The Bandits 6-9 record may look more deceiving than it truly is. Sioux City faced the Sioux Falls Storm on four separate occasions this season and took them to within eight points in Sioux Falls during Week 13 after the Storm came back in the fourth quarter with 18 unanswered points to take the win.

The Bandits nudged out the Ohio Valley Greyhounds (6-9) with a 1-0 head-to-head tie breaker for the sixth seed. The Greyhounds were led all season long by Matt Kohn who broke nearly every passing record in the UIF this season. The Bloomington Extreme was the first expansion team in the UIF and finished with a 5-10 record. The Ft. Wayne Freedom won their first three games of the season and then went on a nine game skid before winning again and finished with a 4-11 record. The Peoria Rough Riders finished the year 0-15.
