Amsterdam Mohawks News Release

In 2006, former Alabama ace pitcher Austin Hyatt and Stanford second baseman Cord Phelps were roommates in Amsterdam, NY spending their summer playing for the Mohawks. Now, both players have emerged as highly touted prospects on their way to wearing major league uniforms in the near future.

Hyatt, a right handed pitcher was recently named the High Class A Florida State League Pitcher of the Year. His numbers for the Clearwater Phillies were eye-popping. In 124 innings pitched, he was 11-5 with a 3.04 ERA. What stood out however, was his 156 strikeouts and only 35 walks. During August, Hyatt's numbers caught the Phillies attention as well, as he earned a promotion to the Phils Class AA team in Reading where he also excelled in four starts there. For the Mohawks in 2006, Austin was 2-1 with a 2.23 ERA. He struck out 41 batters in 32 innings pitched. He was a 15th round pick of the Phillies in 2009 after anchoring the Alabama Crimson Tide staff the two seasons prior to that.

Phelps meanwhile, just completed his third season in minor league ball. He started the year for the Akron Aeros, the Cleveland Indians Class AA affiliate but after tearing up the Eastern League was quickly promoted to the Columbus Clippers Class AAA team. Phelps ended up hitting third for the eventual International League Champions and hit .317 with 8 homeruns. Due to his success, he was recently added to the Peoria roster in the prestigious Arizona Fall League where all of the top prospects in baseball compete. In addition, he was named as a second baseman for Team USA for the upcoming Pan-Am Games qualifier taking place in Puerto Rico. He is expected to compete for the Indians starting second base job next spring. For the Mohawks in 2006, Phelps hit .276 with 24 RBIs but his work ethic stood out. Two seasons later at Stanford, he had an outstanding year for the Cardinal, leading them to a College World Series trip, hitting .351 with 13 homeruns. That season helped him become a third round draft pick in the 2008 draft.

Hyatt and Phelps, roomed with former Alabama outfielder Tyler Odle at Bob Adamson' s residence in Amsterdam and were part of a Mohawks team that went 21-24.
