2006 Mohawk Makes MLB Debut Starting Phillies Spring Opener

It didn't take long for Austin Hyatt (Mohawks 2006) to make an impact with the defending National League East champion Philadelphia Phillies. Hyatt started and threw two shutout innings in a 6-1 exhibition game victory over Florida State University on Wed. afternoon in Clearwater, Fla. at Bright House Field. The exhibition game was the first of Spring Training for the Phillies.

The former University of Alabama fireballer retired all six Florida State Seminole batters he faced and struck out three in his spring debut.

Hyatt is taking part in Spring Training with the Philadelphia Phillies as a non-roster invitee. Last season, the 25-year-old pitched for the Eastern League's Reading Phillies and he led all of Double-A with 171 strikeouts. He went 12-6 for Reading and accrued a 3.85 earned run average over 154.1 innings pitched. Hyatt set professional career highs in appearances (28), starts (28), victories (12), innings pitched and strikeouts.

The Atlanta, Ga., native is entering his third full season of professional baseball. Hyatt was a 15th-round pick of the Phillies in the 2009 Major League Baseball draft. In his first full professional season, Austin was named the Florida State League Pitcher of the Year in 2010. He went 11-5 and struck out 156 batters in 23 FSL appearances.

Through three minor league seasons, the former Amsterdam Mohawk has accumulated a 27-11 mound mark and 441 strikeouts.

NOTES...Hunter Pence (Mohawks 2002) started for Philadelphia in right field and batted in the clean-up spot. He smashed a double in his only official at-bat and also drew a walk....Austin Hyatt was one of eight Philadelphia pitchers used in the game; he was the only pitcher to throw more than one inning...Michael Schwimer, a member of the Saratoga Phillies in 2005, also pitched in the game...When Hyatt makes his official Major League debut, he will become the seventh former Mohawk to reach the Majors.
