2005-06 season is days from beginning

September 7, 2005 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Bozeman Icedogs News Release

The 2005-06 season is days from beginning, and Saturday's game against the Blackhawks is their only warm up before taking on the back-to-back NAHL champs next weekend in their regular season opener. Saturday's game is sponsored by Century 21 Summit realty and will feature a post-game Meet and Mingle with players from both teams.

Back by popular demand is the Gallatin Valley Hockey Club Cow Toss sponsored by Country Classic Dairies! Be sure to stop by the Gallatin Valley Hockey Club table and pick up your cows...and try to win the grand prize, or a FREE case of Pepsi or FREE oil change from Big O Tires. For insurance and liability reasons, the first ten kids to come down to the east tunnel with a Gallatin Valley Hockey Club team jersey on will get to assist with the Cow Toss cleanup.

Due to a delay at Customs, Cheerstix will not be here in time for Saturday's game. We apologize to our fans and children for this. They are expected to arrive in time for our games next weekend against the Texas Tornado. Don't forget....fans will receive a FREE round of golf at Big Sky if the game is sold out next Friday.

The Booster Club picnic will be held this Sunday from noon to 5:00 pm at the River Rock Community Center. This activity is for Booster Club members and Billets. If you are interested in joining the Booster Club, visit their table on the north side of the concourse during Saturday's game.

Spotlight on Pete Fylling #26

I started playing hockey at age four and was taught by my dad and two brothers. I started playing hockey because my brothers played. My first fight was at age 18 and I got in this fight because a player from the Minnesota Blizzard asked me to. The reaction I got from my parents was that my mom was scared. I scored my first goal at age six, and celebrated this goal by going down on one knee and pumping my fist in the air. I got my first penalty at age nine, and what I remember from this penalty is that the other kid tripped over my stick so I didn't think I should have gotten the penalty. The highlight of my career so far has been playing in the national tournament last season.

I decided to play hockey in Bozeman because I heard it is a great program and nice town. I bring these skills to the ICEDOGS: my larger size and hard hitting. I get prepared for a home game by eating a big breakfast, attending the pre-game skate, maybe taking a nap, and listening to some music.

I am motivated to work hard by trying to further my hockey career. I would like to get a degree in Pharmacy, and improve my reading skills. In life, the top five things I value are friendship, family, education, religion, and hockey.

ICEDOGS Solid In Scrimmage Against Bulls

In an official scrimmage against the Billings Bulls last night at the Valley Ice Garden, the ICEDOGS showed there might be a little more intensity in this year's team. The practice game, closed to the public, was needed to give the ICEDOGS an extra game under their belt before taking on the powerhouse Texas Tornado on September 16th and 17th. Next Saturday is the home opener with an exhibition against the Bozeman Blackhawks Junior B team.

It was a longer game than normal, playing four 25 minute periods. Billings and Bozeman coaches established this format so that one group from each team played the first two periods while a second group played the second two. About 1/3 of the ICEDOGS played all four.

"We were looking to see how far the players have come in terms of finishing checks, playing hard, and executing our system since beginning camp two weeks ago. The power play clicked, something that you don't normally see so early in the season.

All of our six veteran players played well and led the way. Rookie Pete Fylling had a very strong game showing his speed and how he handles the puck. It is difficult for opponents to get the puck away from him. Kyle Bailey had four goals, Adam Krefski added three, while Luke Bennett, Mark Columbus, Ryan Bunger, and Matt Hughes all had two.

Billings outplayed us the first period, but our guys came back. The goaltending came up big when it had to and guys learned how to hang in their on the defensive side. Solid defense resulted in numerous scoring opportunities. Number one goaltender Matt Dalton played the first and fourth periods, Mike Jarboe played the second, and Devan Hartigan played the third. Matt has Junior A experience, but he is being pushed by the other two.

This game was a very good confidence builder. We have been in camp for two weeks, and this offers something for them something to shoot for as we begin the season," said Head Coach John LaFontaine.
