July 28, 2019 - California League (CalL1)
San Jose Giants News Release
The Giants clinched their fifth straight series victory with a 9-5 win over the Modesto Nuts on Saturday night at John Thurman Field. San Jose scored four runs in the top of the first to jump out to the early lead, withstood Modesto's comeback effort in the middle frames and then took control of the game late en route to the victory. The Giants have now won the first two against the Nuts in the series and four of five games overall on their road trip.
San Jose sent eight batters to the plate during a four-run, five-hit top of the first inning and wouldn't look back. Consecutive singles from Manuel Geraldo and Heliot Ramos to start the game put runners on the corners with none out. Sandro Fabian then bounced into an RBI fielder's choice with Geraldo coming home and Ramos forced at second. After a David Villar single, Courtney Hawkins flied out to deep center advancing the runners to second and third. Dalton Combs followed with a line drive single into center plating both Fabian and Villar for a 3-0 advantage. Heath Quinn then stepped to the plate and belted a double off the fence in deep right center to bring home Combs with the fourth run of the inning.
The Giants stretched their lead to 5-0 when Geraldo launched a solo home run to deep right in the top of the second. The homer was Geraldo's second of the road trip and third this season.
Jake Wong started on the mound for San Jose and began his night with two hitless innings. Wong though would run into trouble beginning in the bottom of the third. The Nuts scratched across one run on a sacrifice fly in the third before pushing across three more runs in the fourth to get back into the game. Eugene Helder produced a two-run double with one out in the fourth bringing Modesto to within 5-3. A Johnny Adams two-out infield hit then scored Helder to cut the Giants lead to a single run.
The Nuts though were unable to come all the way back as San Jose's bullpen dominated throughout the middle and late innings and the Giants would take back the momentum late. Luis Amaya relieved Wong to begin the bottom of the fifth and set down the side in order in his first inning of work. San Jose then rallied with two outs in the top of the sixth scoring once to make it 6-4. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, Fabian Pena walked, Brandon Van Horn was hit by a pitch and Geraldo delivered an RBI single.
Amaya then breezed through another perfect inning in the bottom of the sixth before the Giants scored once in the seventh. With two on and two outs, Combs came through with an RBI single for a 7-4 cushion.
Garrett Cave needed only eight pitches to work a perfect bottom of the seventh for San Jose before Jesus Tona tossed a six-pitch 1-2-3 eighth inning. The Giants then knocked out three doubles during a two-run top of the ninth. With one out, Villar doubled to the fence in deep right. Combs then smacked a two-out RBI double into the right field corner before Quinn laced an RBI double down the left field line to extend the lead to 9-4.
Modesto plated one run in the bottom of the ninth as Jake Scheiner led off with a double and later scored on a wild pitch, but Jamie Callahan settled down to slam the door for San Jose.
