East Kentucky Miners News Release
PIKEVILLE, KY. - Two youth pro basketball youth camps under the direction of East Kentucky Miners head coach Kevin Keathley have delivered top-notch instruction to 125 young hoops hopefuls. The Knott County Sportsplex, located in Soft Shell, hosted Coach Keathley's Pro Basketball Youth Camp Monday, June 16-Wednesday, June 18. Fifty-five basketball players from seven Eastern Kentucky counties honored their skills during the Knott County camp. One camp participant from Canada, currently living in Hindman while on a missionary trip, added an international flavor to the camp. Earlier in the month, 70 young basketball players attended a Keathley camp held at Prestonsburg High School. "I was really impressed with the reception we received an hour away at the Knott County Sportsplex this week," said Keathley. "We did our very best at giving the youth of Eastern Kentucky an experience they could benefit from." The campers in attendance at the Knott County camp were focused and determined. Each camper absorbed what the pro basketball youth camp staff was teaching. "I was really impressed with the campers who attended," Keathley added. "The campers worked hard and listened, making my three days much more enjoyable." The Knott County edition of Coach Keathley's Pro Basketball Youth Camp - open to boys and girls - featured campers ages 4-16. Campers routinely showed up early and stayed late. "I'm very proud of the turnout we've had for the youth camp series," Keathley confided. "A total of 125 children have attended the first two camps. Hopefully, we've been able to make an impact on the youth of this community." The East Kentucky Miners head coach taught the same concepts he would as part of a pro basketball practice. An anxious group of campers couldn't wait to participate each day. "The theme of the camp was communication and setting goals," Keathley noted. "I believe that each one of the children that attended my camp has the potential to achieve anything he or she sets their mind to. I really enjoyed working with all of them." Campers were very receptive to the camp staff. Bonds were formed between the camp staff and campers throughout the week. "I want to thank the staff of the camp for doing such a good job working with the campers," said Keathley. "Brian Levy worked with the younger kids and I thought he did a good job of making their experience enjoyable. Coach Jamie Howell from Adams Middle School did a good job of directing the oldest group and helping to keep them focused on the techniques and concepts we stressed each day." Subway of Hindman and Kentucky Farm Bureau of Hindman served as camp sponsors. Each business didn't hesitate when it came time to step forward and sponsor the unique youth basketball camp. "Our sponsors are owed a big thank you for helping to make this event possible," said Keathley. "These businesses and community leaders showed that they want to make a difference in Eastern Kentucky. For that, they should be commended for showing their support to the youth of our community." Central Elementary in Paintsville is scheduled to host Coach Keathley's Pro Basketball Youth Camp July 21-23. Another edition of Coach Keathley's Pro Basketball Youth Camp is slated for Sheldon Clark High School July 31-Aug. 2.
