100th Grey Cup Season to Kickoff Tonight

Published on June 29, 2012 under Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release

TORONTO - The historic 100th Grey Cup season kicks off this weekend with four games that are packed with compelling story lines.

"We couldn't ask for a better slate of games to kickoff what is going to be an historic CFL season," said CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon. "As we look forward to paying tribute to our proud past throughout the year, this weekend we showcase today's stars and teams as they kickoff the road to the 100th Grey Cup."

Whether its four new head coaches taking the sidelines for the first time, Tiger-Cat receiver Andy Fantuz playing his former team, the Roughriders, the Grey Cup rematch between the Bombers and Lions, Argo Ricky Ray returning home to play the Eskimos or Alouettes veteran Anthony Calvillo taking on the Stampeders up and coming Drew Tate on Canada Day, these story lines for the 2012 opening weekend are certainly worthy of the 100th Grey Cup season.

To add to the excitement on the field, TSN and RDS will premiere on Canada Day and prior to the Alouettes-Stampeders game, 'It Reflects Us All', a four minute video produced by the CFL that captures the history of the Grey Cup and how it has become much more than just a trophy, but a national icon that brings Canadians together each and every year. The video is scored to Tragically Hip'sGift Shop and is narrated by Canadian actor and star Kiefer Sutherland. The video was produced with the CFL's creative agency Bensimon Byrne, who also helped produce the popular CFL video, 'This is Our League'.

It's also fitting that while the CFL kicks off the 100th Grey Cup season, BC Lions receiver Geroy Simon is looking to add to the history books and become the league's all-time leader in receiving yards. Simon is just 67 yards away from breaking future Hall of Famer Milt Stegall's record of 15,153 career receiving yards. The 14-year CFL veteran will have a chance to set the new mark at home against the Blue Bombers on Friday night. Stegall and CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon will be in attendance to possibly witness history.
