(Pleasanton, CA. February 3, 2006) The Golden Baseball League today announced that the Fullerton Flyers have signed Jerry Turner to a contract to be their hitting coach for the upcoming 2006 season. His ten seasons in the major leagues brings the three member Fullerton Flyers coaching staff to 51 years of big league experience.

"I am thrilled to have such an outstanding hitter and dedicated teacher joining my staff," said Fullerton Flyers Manager Garry Templeton. "Jerry was one of the best pure hitters I ever played with and I'm looking forward to his impact on our team."

Turner, originally from Texarkana, Arkansas, was the 10th round draft choice of the San Diego Padres in 1972. He reached the Padres big league club in 1974 as a 20-year old after dominating minor league pitching in A, AA, and AAA for a combined .321 batting average over three seasons. He played eight years for the Padres, becoming a starting outfielder in 1979 after a spectacular year as a pinch hitter in 1978 when he set the still-standing single season pinch hit batting average record of .408. He then played parts of two seasons with the Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers before returning to the Padres for his final campaign in 1983. After his playing days, he served as an area scout for the Atlanta Braves for several years before moving into youth sports coaching and teaching for the Los Angeles Unified School District.

"This is a superb addition for the Flyers," said Ed Hart, General Manager of the Fullerton team. "Not only will Jerry be a great coach, but he also is committed to becoming very active with our youth sports and community outreach programs, especially with the 17 Little Leagues in our immediate vicinity."

The Fullerton Flyers open their second season in the Golden Baseball League at home against the Yuma Scorpions on Thursday, June 15th at 7:05 P.M., after beginning the year on the road. Tickets for the opener and the rest of the season are still available at www.fullertonflyers.com.
