Texas Copperheads News Release
Austin, TX - Kamau Jackson's 1 yard TD run at the 1:35 mark of the 4th quarter proved to be the game winning score as the Austin Wranglers defeated the Texas Copperheads by a final score of 41-38 on Saturday night at the Frank Erwin Center. Moments later, Texas kicker Nick Gatto kicked a potential game tying field goal off the left end zone net as the ball appeared to be tipped at the line of scrimmage. The victory gave Austin a share of the National Southwest division lead with a 7-6 record. The Copperheads fell to 2-11.
Austin QB Andy Hall found LeJuan Edwards with an 18 yard TD pass to open 1st quarter scoring. Texas answered when Tim Riley hauled in a Stephen Wasil 8 yard strike to tie the game at 7.
Hall put the Wranglers ahead early in the 2nd quarter at 14-7 when he connected with Mel Long on a 6 yard scoring pass. Copperheads RB David Kennebrew helped Texas pull even when he scored on a 12 yard run.
Hall threw his 3rd TD pass of the first half finding John Roberson for 2 yards. Texas then scored 10 consecutive points to take a 24-21 halftime lead. First, Gatto kicked a 19 yard FG to cut Austin's lead to 21-17. Then, on the ensuing possession, Texas DB Dez Abrams stripped the ball from Austin WR Sean Hensley and returned it 6 yards for a TD.
Austin scored the only points of the 3rd quarter and took the lead 28-24 when Jackson scored the first of his two rushing TDs with a 1 yard plunge.
Austin opened 4th quarter scoring when Hall completed a 16 yard TD pass to Hensley. Wasil answered by finding Riley with a 34 yard TD toss. On the play Riley sprinted for the left corner of the end zone, turned back toward Wasil and made a twisting grab for the score. Riley was recognized by the Austin media and awarded with Cutter's Catch of the Game honors for his efforts.
After an Abrams interception of Hall, Texas took a 38-35 lead on David Kennebrew's 2nd TD run of the night. This time Kennebrew scored from 2 yards. Jackson then scored at the 1:35 mark of the 4th quarter to give Austin the win.
