Spirit lose 4-2 contest to Sting

(Sarnia, ON) The Saginaw Spirit lost to the Sarnia Sting 4-2 Friday night. The Spirit outshot the Sting 37 to 31. Saginaw is in 8th place in the OHL Western Conference with 48 points and a record of 21-19-4-2. The Sting are in 6th place with 50 points and the Guelph Storm are in 7th place with 49 points.

The Spirit opened the scoring in the contest, when center Ryan McDonough picked up a rebounded shot from center Jack Combs at the 5:59 mark in the first period. Sting center Steven Stamkos answered from Sarnia at 11:44 in the period with an unassisted goal, taking the score to 1-1. Sarnia would extend their lead with two goals in the later part of the first period, the first being on the power play from defenseman Mark Katic at the 12:20 mark. Defenseman Steve Whitely and winger Devin DiDiomete assisted on the goal. Sting center Jamie Arniel moved the score to 3-1 with a goal at 16:30 in the first, assisted by winger Aaron Snow and winger Daniel Lombardi.

The Spirit wouldn't leave the period down two goals however - defenseman Adam Comrie fired a shot from the blue line, reducing the Sting lead to 3-2. Saginaw's Ryan McDonough assisted on Comrie's 5th goal of the season.

The score remained 3-2 through the second period and into the third. The Sting would give themselves an insurance goal at 3:58 in the third on the power play, courtesy winger Justin DiBenedetto with the assists going to Arniel and Snow.

Saginaw goalie Edward Pasquale tallied 27 saves in the effort, with Sarnia netminder Andrew Perugini notching 35 saves. For a complete game sheet, please visit www.ontariohockeyleague.com
