Tennessee Valley Raptors News Release

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - It was a painful end to the 2005 United Indoor Football regular season for the Tennessee Valley Raptors. The Raptors battled injuries throughout Saturday night's home game against the Omaha Beef, struggled on both sides of the football and were dealt a 36-18 loss before 4,217 fans at the Von Braun Center. The Raptors had a two-game win streak snapped and finished 6-9, while the Beef improved to 9-6. Both teams have next weekend off and both are still awaiting their eventual playoff seeding.

"Penalties absolutely killed us," said Tennessee Valley coach Dick Adams, whose team finished 5-3 at home. "I was disappointed in absolutely every phase of our game tonight. We have four or five players pretty banged up right now and I just hope the idle week will give us a chance to mend and get ready for the postseason."

Omaha opened the scoring with a 25-yard field goal by Ted Retzlaff at 13:39 in the second quarter for a 3-0 lead. Tennessee Valley answered at 8:22 with quarterback Chris Gunn's 2-yard touchdown run, capping a seven-play, 40-yard drive. Steven Lee missed the point after and the Raptors led 6-3.

The Beef went up 10-6 on Rod Malone's 2-yard run at 4:44 after a five-play, 35-yard drive. Retzlaff kicked the extra point. He added a 42-yard field goal with seven seconds left and the Beef led 13-6 at halftime.

Omaha quarterback John McMenamin threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Jason Mitchell at 9:01 in the third quarter. This finished an eight-play, 31-yard drive. Retzlaff's kick made it 20-6. Tennessee Valley answered with a four-play, 31-yard drive directed by backup quarterback Ben Sankey. He connected with Luke McArdle for a 14-yard touchdown pass, cutting the deficit to 20-12 at 5:39 in the third.

The Beef extended its lead to 23-12 on Retzlaff's 19-yard field goal at 12:34 in the fourth. McMenamin hit Neuby Ras with a 3-yard touchdown pass with 5:07 left; and Retzlaff's kick made it 30-12. Tennessee Valley cut the deficit to 30-18 on Sankey's 35-yard touchdown pass to Nicholas Wells with 4:17 left. The Beef upped its lead to 36-18 on Rod Malone's 6-yard touchdown run at 1:44, capping a three-play, 15-yard drive.
