Phantoms Second Home Game Postponed

April 14, 2006 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Palm Beach Phantoms News Release

The Palm Beach Phantoms will have to reschedule their second home game in a row, as they have yet to reach an agreement with the Delray Beach Tennis Center . The two postponed games will be rescheduled for later in the season, pending the Phantoms reach an agreement with home venue. League President, Carolyn Shiver, has given the team a one week deadline to find and secure a venue for the 2006 season.

"It's unfortunate that the Phantoms are in this situation, and it's extremely unfortunate for the fans of Palm Beach," stated Carolyn Shiver, NIFL President. "People have been led to believe that is a financial issue, being that the team has not made the necessary deposit, but that is not it at all."

Initially the Palm Beach Phantoms were told that it would cost $11,000 per game to rent the Delray Beach Tennis Center, however, that number would increase as the team got closer to signing a lease agreement. When the Phantoms were ready to sign, a hidden amount of $20,000 per game was added - leaving the Phantoms with a $30,000 per game rental fee. In addition to the $11,000 rental fee, there was $12,500 for security and $7,500 for sub-contractor fees added.

"The NIFL is not going to allow any of our member teams to pay that rental amount for a facility," added Carolyn Shiver. "Had the team posted the necessary deposit by the due date, they [the Phantoms] would have been liable for the added amounts as well. If it were part of the initial amount that was negotiated, that is one thing, but to have it added last minute is not right."

The Phantoms are in negotiation with the Delray Beach Tennis Center, as they attempt to reach an agreement, making them the first team in NIFL history to play in an open roof facility. If an agreement cannot be reached, the Phantoms will seek addition venues for which they can play out the remainder of their 2006 season. For additional information on the Phantoms, please contact Jim Grimmel, Phantoms President, at 561.433.1302, or the Phantoms Front Office at 561-798-4700.

The Phantoms apologize for the inconvenience this has placed on its opponents and fans, and look forward to stepping on their home turf in the near future.
