Macon Knights and Kansas City to hold open tryout

MACON, Ga. - The Macon Knights will continue to assemble their 2006 roster, in conjunction with the Kansas City Arena Football team coached by former Knights head coach Kevin Porter. The two teams will hold an open tryout Saturday, November 19th at Christ Chapel @ SportsTowne - the Knights' official practice and training facility. Registration will begin at 8:00 am.

There will be a registration fee of $50 the day of the tryout, walk-ups welcome (registration fee is non-refundable). The Knights organization will take payment in the form of cash, credit card, or by money order/cashier's check made payable to GSE, L.L.C.

Participants need to bring outdoor cleats, athletic shoes suitable for NeXturf and AstroTurf (cleats acceptable, no spikes) and wear proper athletic attire for both indoors and outdoors (nothing will be provided). Participants will be tested in the 40-yard dash, 20-yard short shuttle and put through a series of non-contact drills. This tryout is for every position other than kicker as their will be a tryout held specifically for kickers at a later date.

Derek Stingley - In Stingley's first season as a coach for the Knights he saw the team start 2-5 as defensive coordinator. Once the change was made to make Stingley head coach, the Knights finished the season with a mark of 8-8 and made the playoffs after only missing the playoffs one time in the team's five-year history. Stingley also played in the Arena Football League with the Indiana Firebirds, where he won an ArenaBowl Championship, and with the Dallas Desperados, among others. Stingley also earned All-AFL honors in 1999 with the Firebirds. He ranks ninth all time in the AFL in tackles with 443.5 and fifth on the pass-breakups list with 110.

Kevin Porter - Kevin Porter makes the jump from defensive coordinator with the New Orleans VooDoo (2004-2005) to Head Coach of the expansion AFL team in Kansas City. Porter in his first year as an AFL defensive coordinator led the VooDoo to the second ranked scoring defense. Porter gained experience as a head coach with the Macon Knights of arenafootball2 by taking the team to the ArenaCup in 2003 and finishing his af2 coaching career with a record of 45-27, which at the time made him the winningest coach in af2 history. A seven-year NFL veteran, Kevin Porter played with the Kansas City Chiefs, New York Jets and the London Monarchs.
