Daytona Beach Hawgs News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. â The Daytona Beach Hawgs football club of the National Indoor Football League will open discussions with the Volusia County- operated Ocean Center concerning a contract, as soon as the NIFL playoffs have concluded for the franchise, it was announced today by Centurion Sports Management, the administrative arm of the Hawgs.
"We have every intention of furthering our relationship with the Ocean Center," and we will play a post-season game in the fine county facility this year," said Anthony J. Pewonski, owner operator of the Hawgs, "And we will play a post-season game in the fine county-owned facility this year,"
The team's management group wanted to dispel any rumors or discussion that the Hawgs will not be back in Daytona Beach next year. The team will play either in the Ocean Center, as it has this past season, or in another facility, yet to be determined.
"We understand there is another league which seeks to play at the Ocean Center," said Mr. Pewonski. "Based on if the other team will play and when they will play, I am sure they will be entertaining to the fans. The league wants to go from six teams to 16 or 20, so expansion has been paramount with its growth."
Mr. Pewonski said he had recently entertained the sale of the Hawgs, in part or whole, to Daytona Beach businessmen Kevin and Zack McDonald.
"We had obtained offers to buy the team, but they were unable to come up with an adequate financial package to do that," said Mr. Pewonski. "We wish them the best in their future endeavor."
It also was noted that no lease had been signed with the arena, and purchase of a team was on-going, with the new team. A window of opportunity has been prescribed by the Ocean Center.
There is a possibility, with a 7-4 overall record, the Hawgs could finish the season as good as 10-4. That would put them in the driver's seat in the Atlantic Conference. They would have to defeat the Morays in Miami, the Guard in Fayetteville and the Xtreme in New Jersey to close out the 2005 regular season.
