Halifax Rainmen to Battle Rochester RazorSharks
February 18, 2011 - Premier Basketball League (PBL)
Rochester RazorSharks News Release
The Matchup: This is the second and final meeting of the regular Premier Basketball League season for these two teams. Halifax defeated Rochester 111-97 on January 30 at home.
The RazorSharks (3-6) ended a four game losing streak with a 103-99 win over Kentucky. Sammy Monroe, a veteran of two PBL championship teams, scored a game high 22 points in his second game back with Rochester.
Mike Williams is rounding into shape. He was the PBL scoring leader while with Vermont. Since coming to Rochester three games ago, Williams scored 7 in his debut; missed a game injured; and got 14 against the Bluegrass Stallions.
7 foot center Jared Carter is now the PBL's leading shot blocker with 12 in nine games. Cater had three against Kentucky.
Rochester still leads the league in turnovers with 20.11 per game, but gave the ball away only 11 times last Saturday.
The Rainmen (6-3) are in disarray. Since beating the Sharks on January 30, Halifax won a double-overtime game against Quebec, only to have the result overturned on an officiating error. The team fouls count was not reset at the end of regulation play. The overtimes were ordered replayed by the PBL office. The score stands 81-81 after regulation.
The Rainmen then lost at Saint John 83-78, tying a franchise record for fewest points in a game. Guard Tajuan Porter was 0 for 13 shooting.
This week Halifax lost guard Mike Mercer to undisclosed family reasons. Mercer left Canada and moved to Atlanta. He was the team's second leading scorer with 14.5 points per game.
The Rainmen replaced Mercer with 6-foot-10, 260-pound center Kenneth Cooper out of Oklahoma State, Louisiana Tech and Alabama-Birmingham.
Of note: For all their recent troubles, Halifax is still the PBL's top defensive team and leads the league in rebounding. Eric Crookshank is the leading individual rebounder with 11.13 per game.
Of note: This is the first of two home games in three days for the RazorSharks against two of the league's top three teams. Rochester hosts 9-1 Lawton-Fort Sill Monday night.
