Drive Too Much for Knicks in Fourth Quarter
March 30, 2017 - NBA G League (G League)
Grand Rapids Drive News Release
WHITE PLAINS- The Grand Rapids Drive (25-24) outscored the Westchester Knicks (19-30) 41 to 22 in the fourth quarter to earn their third consecutive win Thursday night on the road. The final tally was 108-96.
After trailing by two at halftime, the Knicks outscored the Drive 25-16 in the third quarter to head into the final 12 minutes with a seven point lead, but they could not contain the Grand Rapids offense from there on out despite the strong defensive third.
Kevin Murphy, Ray McCallum and Lorenzo Brown each scored at least 10 points in the fourth quarter for the Drive. Murphy finished with a game-high 32 points, McCallum had 21, and Brown fell one rebound short of a triple-double with 19 points, nine rebounds and 11 assists. McCallum and Nate Wolters are the only Drive players to record triple-doubles since the team moved to Grand Rapids three years ago.
Travis Trice scored 30 points for the Knicks and Kevin Capers and Doron Lamb supported him with 15 points each.
The Drive held a big advantage on the glass despite no players currently on the roster over 6'8. Chris Horton led the way with 11 boards, also scoring 11 points. The Drive finished with 48 rebounds, 14 of them on the offensive end, while the Knicks had 32 total rebounds. Five players had at least two offensive rebounds for the Drive.
Grand Rapids used the second-chance opportunities to separate themselves, as the teams were about equally efficient on the offensive end of the court overall. Both teams hovered around 35 percent from three-point range and 66 percent from the free-throw line, with neither team able to get many attempts up those important places either.
The Drive have now clinched their first .500 season as a franchise since 2011-12 and their first ever as the Grand Rapids Drive. They will look to keep it over .500 in their season finale against the Canton Charge in Grand Rapids tomorrow night, while the Knicks close their season Saturday, still at home against the Long Island Nets.
