Davis Carries Load for Guard
May 16, 2005 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Fayetteville Guard News Release
Wayne Davis has always heard the saying, "good things come to those who wait".
Davis left NCAA DIII Louisiana College as the school's all-time leading rusher as well as the all-time leading rusher in the history of the American Southwest Conference. The former LC Wildcat rushed for a conference record 322 yards against McMurray (TX) University in the fall of 2003.
He looked to pick up right where he left off by signing a contract with the Guard during the winter. Davis came to camp only to find 6 year indoor football veteran Mike Cosey taking most of the reps as the starting running back. Patience paid off as Davis lingered behind Cosey for the 1st four weeks before former head coach Terry Smith decided it was time to pass the torch.
Cosey was subsequently released and Davis hasn't looked back yet accounting for 6 touchdowns in his first significant action of the season in the Guard's first victory on April 30th against Montgomery. He picked up 66 total yards and a crucial 2 point conversion Friday night in the Guard's 47-34 victory over Kissimmee. The former DIII All-American has proved to be a threat receiving as well as rushing catching 12 passes over the last 3 games.
Davis looks to continue his strong play as the Guard looks for their 3rd win in 4 weeks at home Saturday against NIFL Atlantic East division leader St. Louis (7-1). Stay wired to www.fayettevilleguard.com for the game preview.
