May 22, 2017 - Frontier League (FL)
Lake Erie Crushers News Release

The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, split the final two games of their series with the Traverse City Beach Bums on Sunday afternoon.

The Crushers (4-5) took the first game by a final count of 5-2, and the Beach Bums (4-5) grabbed the series-deciding game by the same score.

Lake Erie got the offense rolling early in game one. Walks to Cody Lenehan and Connor Oliver set the table for Sean Hurley with two gone in the first. Hurley launched a ball over the left field wall to put the Crushers up 3-0.

The Crushers' lead grew again in the fourth inning. Oliver and Hurley led off with back to back walks, and a groundball to short off the bat of Josh McAdams left runners on the corners with one out. With Tanner Lubach at the plate, McAdams stole second, and when second baseman Steve Patterson dropped the pick off attempt, Oliver darted home and McAdams moved to third. Derek Shomon knocked in another run with a high-fly ball that was dropped on the warning track by center fielder Arby Fields, scoring McAdams and pushing the Lake Erie advantage to 5-0.

The Beach Bums peppered in a couple of runs in the fifth and six innings. Nick Murphy led off the fifth with a triple, scoring on Jeff DeBlieux's groundout back to the mound in the next at bat. In the sixth, three consecutive singles from Alexis Rivera, Elijah Trail and Ryan Garvey knocked in the final run of the game to bring the score to 5-2.

Starter Adam Quintana (2-0) collected the win. Quintana lasted six innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts. Chandler Jagodzinski grabbed his third save with a scoreless seventh that saw him strike out one batter.

It was Traverse City that drew blood early in the second game. DeBlieux led off the first with a single, and Fields brought him all the way around to score on a double down the left field line in the next at bat. With DeBlieux coming home, Fields attempted to turn his double into a triple, but he was tagged out at third. Patterson followed up Fields with a solo shot to left to give the Beach Bums 2-0 advantage.

Traverse City doubled their lead in the second inning, as Trail reached on a throwing error by the third baseman Lenehan to lead off the frame. Kendall Patrick scored Trail with an RBI double, and Deblieux connected for a two-out single to bring in Patrick for a 4-0 lead.

The Crushers cut the deficit in half in the fourth inning. Lenehan reached on a single with one out, and Hurley's two-out double put two in scoring position. In the next at bat, McAdams connected for a single, plating two runs to pull Lake Erie within two.

Rivera put an end to any Crusher momentum in the following inning. The Beach Bum's left fielder mashed a dinger deep to right to polish off the scoring and give Traverse City the 5-2 victory.

The Crushers game two starter, Connor Reed shouldered the loss. Reed (0-1) lasted just 3.1 innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits with five strikeouts.

The Crushers get Monday off before they visit the Gateway Grizzlies for a three-game set beginning on Tuesday. Josh Heddinger (0-1, 10.50) makes the start for Lake Erie in game one, which is set to start at 8:05 EST.
