May 16, 2005 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Kissimmee Kreatures News Release
LAKELAND, Fla. â In a clarification of recent media reports, head coach Marquette Smith of the Kissimmee Kreatures in the National Indoor Football League has not resigned from his position, it was announced today by Anthony J. Pewonski, president of Centurion Sports Management.
CSM is the management group for three NIFL teams in Florida, the Lakeland ThunderBolts, the Daytona Beach Hawgs, and Kissimmee. The group also oversees the operation of the NIFL Dayton (Ohio) Warbirds.
"We have not seen a letter of resignation from Coach Smith or his staff," said Mr. Pewonski of recent developments in Kissimmee. "We also do not owe him or the team the monetary amounts coach Smith was referring to."
Smith said previously that he was personally owed $15,000 and the team, which included other staff members, a total of $40,000.
"As of today, coach Smith and his staff, have been relieved of their duties," said Mr. Pewonski. "We will be moving in another direction with the Kissimmee team and hopefully this will mark the end of a tumultuous situation we regret has happened."
Mr. Pewonski said that coach Smith had been relieved of his general manager's position more than 60 days ago because he failed to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of the job.
Coach Smith also failed to even meet some of his coaching obligations because of outside employment, Mr. Pewonski said. Smith also was to meet specific sales criteria for the GM position to offset salary obligations.
Coach Smith and his staff compiled a 2-7 record with five games left on the schedule. After upsetting the top team in the Atlantic East Division, Miami, 51-48, on a last second field goal, they have not been able to score effectively in the last three games.
This was Smith's first head coaching position.
