COBRAS LAST WEEK: Quarterback Adrian McPherson accounted for six touchdowns in leading the Indiana Firebirds to a convincing 65-31 victory over the Carolina Cobras on Easter Sunday at the Conseco Fieldhouse. The first-year signal caller did not throw an incomplete pass until late in the third quarter as he passed for five touchdowns, and ran for another, in helping the home team to its fifth straight victory. The Firebirds used a near-perfect first-half performance by McPherson to take a 34-17 lead after two quarters, an advantage they would build on throughout the second half. The Cobras struggled to contain the Indiana passing game all afternoon, while also committing three turnovers and losing the ball twice on downs. Carolina was paced by Matt Nagy, who completed 26-of-43 passes for 289 yards and three touchdowns. The second-year quarterback also committed two turnovers in the contest. Todd Doxzon posted strong numbers once again as he reeled in seven passes for 111 yards and a score.
SOUL LAST WEEK (4/4): A game that started off rocky for the Philadelphia Soul, ended up being just what the team needed, as 17,597 screaming fans witnessed a 47-31 romp over division rival, Dallas Desperados. A game filled with a lot of emotion, Dallas committed 21 penalties for 129 yards, which ties an AFL record, while Philadelphia only committed nine. Soul quarterback Todd Hammel, who made his second start of the season, went 12-of-23 for 194 yards and three touchdowns. For Dallas, quarterback Walter Church threw for 22-of-37 for 282 yards and three touchdowns, while throwing one interception. Also starring on offense for Philadelphia was offensive specialist Tyronne Jones, who caught four passes for 98 yards and one touchdown, en route to being named Offensive Player of the Game. Chris Ryan had five rushes for four yards and two touchdowns, and one reception for eight yards and a touchdown. On defense, he recorded three tackles, two sacks, a pass break-up and a blocked kick. For his efforts, Ryan was named U.S. Army Ironman of the Game.

SNAKE BITES:
Terrible Trio: The Cobras have dropped a frustrating seven out of eight games after beginning the 2004 campaign with two consecutive wins. The worst play of the season may be found in their current three-game losing streak in which the offense has struggled to get on track. After posting nearly 52 points per game during the first seven games of the season, the offense has mustered only 34.3 per game over the last three contests.
Flag Day: The Cobras have been flagged for penalty yards at a record-rate thus far in 2004. Through 10 games, Carolina has been called for 85 penalties for 568 yards â an average of 56.8 yards per game. Conversely, the Soul are one of the least penalized clubs in the league, averaging 42.4 penalty yards per game.

Nifty Fifty: The first team to 50 points very well could be the victor in this weekend's matchup. Throughout their five-year history, the Cobras have had very little success when they are unable to post 50 points or more. At the same time, they have been most successful when holding opponents under the half-century mark.

Third and Oh!: The Carolina defense continues to struggle to limit opponents' success on third down. After allowing Indiana to convert 3-of-4 third down attempts, the Cobras rank 18th in the league â allowing opponents to convert 34-of-57 attempts (60.0 percent) on the season. Carolina has also been ineffective on offense, converting only 27-of-69 (39.0 percent) attempts.
In the Zone: The Cobras have been very efficient in the red-zone throughout the 2004 season, leading the league with a 95.0 conversion percentage. In 40 trips inside their opponents' 10-yard line, Carolina has scored 34 touchdowns and four field goals. The next closest competitor is the Los Angeles Avengers, who have scored on 43-of-46 attempts in the red zone.
Long Ball: The Cobras have been victimized by deep, downfield passes on a consistent basis in recent weeks. Over the past five games, Carolina has surrendered a total of 27 touchdown passes - 12 of those were for 25 yards or longer. Conversely, Philadelphia has given up 18 touchdown passes in its last five games, with only three of those being 25 or more yards.
He Roxz: OS Todd Doxzon has been the Cobras most productive receiver throughout the 2004 campaign and is on pace to shatter many of the franchise's single-season receiving records. Thus far, he is second in the league with82 receptions and 946 yards. Currently, he is seven receptions and two receiving touchdowns shy of the single-season franchise records. Following is how he would stack up with the top pass catchers in Carolina's five-year history if he continues on his current pace.

Second Half Woes: The Cobras have either been tied or led after the first quarter in six of the 10 games this season, however, poor second-half showings have sealed their fate on more than one occasion. During the team's current three-game losing streak, they have been outscored 91-48 in the final two quarters, an average of 14 points per game. For the season, Carolina has been beaten on the scoreboards 266-208 in the second half.
Glimmer of Hope: Despite their recent struggles, the Cobras hold on to a slim hope to reach the 2004 postseason. One factor working in their favor is that they have one of the easiest schedules of any team over the final seven weeks.
Opp. Record Win Pct.
First 10 games 50-43 .538

Turnover Ratio: After holding a plus-seven turnover ratio through three games, Carolina has steadily lost the all-important advantage. During their current stretch of seven losses in eight games, the Cobras hold a minus-four turnover ratio, including three major miscues in the loss to Indiana. This number is amplified by the fact that Carolina has been able to secure victory once in 33 occasions in which the team was turned the ball over more than their opponent.
Two-way players: Carolina has been aided throughout the 2004 campaign by two of the most versatile and productive two-way players in the AFL, WR/DB's Damien Groce and Jarrick Hillery. Each player ranks among the team leaders in most offensive, defensive and special teams categories.

Carolina currently ranks last in the AFL with 9.1 yards per game on the ground.
Pace Setters: The Cobras have a number of players on pace to set a variety of single-season records if they continue on their current pace. Following is a chart of where each player currently stands, the record and the record-holder.

Early Bird Gets the Worm: The first team to score this weekend is likely to hold a large advantage based on the Cobras' history. This season, Carolina is 3-2 when they get on the board first, but winless in five contests when the opponents notch the first points. A similar trend can be found throughout team history â (11-17 when scoring first; 8-32 when opponent scores first).
Heading In the Right Direction: Regardless of the recent struggles, this year's Cobras have seen a vast improvement over last season's squad in a number of key areas.

Pass offense 232.7 204.8

Coming Into His Own: Second-year quarterback Matt Nagy continues to thrive in his first season of extended playing time since his senior year at the University of Delaware in 2000. The Pennsylvania native began his rookie campaign as a starter with the New York Dragons in 2002, before being relegated to back-up duties for the final eight games of the season. He then suffered a knee-injury that forced him to miss the entire 2003 campaign. This season, he has started all nine contest for Carolina, setting career highs in pass attempts (305), completions (200), yards (2,082) and touchdowns (44).
On the Sidelines: Following the dismissal of Eddie Khayat after the sixth game of the 2004 season, John Gregory was named as the fifth head coach in Carolina history. It marked the third mid-season coaching change in five seasons.

Queen-Sized Win: Carolina put an end to a grueling, AFL-record 16-game home losing streak on March 21 with a 54-43 victory over the defending ArenaBowl champions, the Tampa Bay Storm. The Cobras special teams accounted for three touchdowns, while the defense pressured the Storm throughout the game, posting two interceptions and nine passes defended.
Nothing But Iron-man: WR/DB Jarrick Hillery was recognized as the Army Ironman of the Week for his performance against Tampa Bay on Sunday, March 21. The four-year veteran recorded two kickoff returns for touchdowns, caught three passes for 39 yards and a score and added four solo tackles and an interception on defense.
Dragons Fly South: Joining Gregory in making the move to Charlotte are eight former New York Dragons, including OL/DL Nate Bell, OS Todd Doxzon, WR/DB Damien Groce, QB Matt Nagy, OL/DL Sean Tremblay, OL/DL Cory Stone and WR/LB Jack Walker Jr.. OL/DL Robert Stewart also appeared in 28 games with the Dragons in 2001 and 2002.
The Making of the Cobras: The Cobras have experienced a dramatic makeover following the disappointments of the 2003 season. Only two players from last year's squad will be on the field in the tenth week, OL/DL Robert Stewart and 2003 Team MVP WR/DB Bernard Holmes. Of the 22 remaining players on the active roster, 21 were signed as free agents.
