Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

LYNCHBURG, VA - Eric Campbell became the first Pelican to sock two home runs in a game this year, but Lynchburg stuck for nine unanswered runs in the middle three frames en route to a 10-6 win over Myrtle Beach before 1,696 fans at City Stadium Sunday night. Lynchburg improved to 3-1 in the second half and 32-39 overall, while the Pelicans fell to 2-2 and 32-41.

Myrtle Beach got off to a promising start, as Elvis Andrus laced a one-out single to center in the top of the first inning and Campbell followed with a mammoth two-run homer to left to give the Pelicans a quick 2-0 lead. The Hillcats countered with a run in the bottom of the frame, as Pedro Powell led off with a single and eventually scored when Lynchburg took a play out of the Myrtle Beach playbook and pulled off a delayed double steal that ended with Powell swiping home standing up. Campbell answered right back in the top of the third however, drilling a solo home run off the scoreboard in left-center to become the 17th player in franchise history to hit two home runs in a game, and the first to do so since Van Pope on August 15th of last year (also at Lynchburg). Jose Camarena stretched the lead to 4-1 in the fourth with a bloop RBI single to right, but the Hillcats would turn the tide thereafter.

Jason Delaney led off the bottom of the fourth with a double to right-center, and after Myrtle Beach All-Star Moises Hernandez got the next two outs Tripper Johnson cut the margin to a single run with a two-run homer to left. Lynchburg then took the lead for good with four runs in the fifth, as James Boone tied the game with an RBI double to center that Jordan Schafer couldn't track down, and two batters later former Atlanta minor leaguer Jamie Romak put the Cats ahead 6-4 with a two-run double just inside the third base bag. Johnson added a run-scoring single later in the inning, and Lynchburg then tacked on three more runs in the sixth. Pelicans reliever Jorge Acosta walked four batters in the inning, and three of those free passes came around to score on an RBI single by Boone, a wild pitch, and an RBI fielder's choice by Johnson to make it 10-4.

Myrtle Beach got a run back in the seventh on an RBI groundout for Campbell's fourth RBI of the night, and put a mild scare into Lynchburg in the top of the ninth. Camarena drew a leadoff walk and Quentin Davis followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Schafer struck out looking, but Andrus beat out a potential double play ball for an RBI fielder's choice to make it 10-6. Campbell followed with a sharp single to center, but with Matt Young waiting on deck as the potential tying run Isaiah Ka'aihue was robbed of a hit on a shoestring catch by Brad Corley in right field to end the game.

Kyle Bloom (7-6) recovered from a rough start to earn the win, allowing five runs (four earned) and six hits in 6.1 innings. Hernandez (9-3) lost for the first time since May 4th, allowing a season-high seven runs and nine hits in 4.1 innings. Matt Swanson got the final out for his 12th save. Campbell went 3-5 for his fifth straight multi-hit game, Davis finished 2-4 and Paul Bennett extended his hitting streak to a season-high eight games.

Game two in this three-game series is set for 7:05 p.m. Monday as left-hander Carlos Sencion (0-1, 4.09 ERA) takes on Lynchburg's Todd Redmond (5-4, 3.98 ERA). The game broadcast begins at 6:45 p.m. with the RSC Equipment Rental pre-game show on ESPN Radio the Team (93.7 FM, 93.9 FM, and 1050 AM) and online at www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com.
