Birmingham Tops Pensacola

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Montressa Kirby threw for 223 yards and four touchdowns as Birmingham topped Pensacola 70-40 here Saturday before a crowd of 2,803.

Pensacola (0-2) got on the board first when long snapper Ben Labelle recovered a missed field goal and Jason Corse's conversion gave the Barracuda's a 7-0 lead. Birmingham scored on the ensuing drive as Kirby connected on his first touchdown pass, a 25-yard strike to Wayne Thomas.

The teams traded scores the rest of the period and the Steeldogs led 20-14 heading into the second quarter.

Kirby threw another touchdown before halftime and also scored on a 10-yard scamper to give Birmingham (2-1) a 35-21 advantage at the break.

The Steeldogs blew the game open in the second half, outscoring Pensacola 35-19.

Cedric Buchanan led the Steeldogs in receiving, grabbing four passes for 79 yards and Thomas added four receptions for 71 yards.

Bobby Clayton was 15-of-30 for Pensacola, for 207 yards and four touchdowns.

The Barracudas are in action again Friday as Mobile visits the Pensacola Civic Center.
