Vermont Mountaineers News Release

NEW BEDFORD, Mass.- The New Bedford Bay Sox scored two runs in the eighth inning, breaking a tie game, to beat the Vermont Mountaineers 3-1 on Sunday in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL).

In a game that featured an ejection and multiple close plays at the plate, Jakob Goldfarb (Scottsdale, Ariz./Oregon) was the hero for New Bedford, knocking a two-run double in the eighth to win it. Connor Hoover (Appling, Ga./North Georgia St.) and Andrew Penner (Frazier Park, Calif./Los Angeles Valley) came around to score on Goldfarb's go-ahead hit.

The Mountaineers got a good start from Michael Fairchild (Olympia, Wash./Azusa Pacific), who pitched seven and two thirds innings, giving up three runs on seven hits. Fairchild walked one and struck out six. The righty allowed just one hit through his first four innings of work.

The Bay Sox started Samuel Nepiarski (Orange, Conn./Connecticut), who also pitched well through seven and two thirds innings, allowing one run on five hits. Nepiarski struck out eight batters, and didn't walk anyone.

The game was a pitcher's duel through seven innings, as a total of just six hits were allowed in that span.

New Bedford got on the board first when second baseman Ted Shaw (Southington, Conn./Sacred Heart) was hit by a pitch, and came around to score two batters later when Danny DiMare (Medford, Mass./Santa Fe CC) hit an RBI single.

Vermont tied the game in the sixth inning when third baseman Jeremy McCuin (Gilbert, Ariz./Arizona St.) doubled and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Will Morgan (Middletown, N.J./Old Dominion).

The contest stayed knotted at one until Goldfarb's double in the eighth.

Matthew Leon (Bethlehem, Pa./Seton Hall) pitched just one third of an inning, but got the win for the Bay Sox. Leon didn't allow a base runner. The win improves him to 1-2 on the season. Darrien Ragins (Dover, Del./Delaware St.) picked up the save after pitching a scoreless ninth. Ragins allowed one hit, and struck out two.

Fairchild suffered the loss for the Mountaineers, moving him to 1-3.

The Mountaineers fall to 17-19 on the year. Vermont will return home on Monday to take on the Upper Valley Nighthawks. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM at Montpelier Recreation Field. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 AM or online through The NECBL Broadcast Network.
