SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries announced on Thursday afternoon that power-hitting first baseman David Bergin will return for the 2016 season.

Bergin put together the best all-around offensive performance of the season for the Canaries in 2015. The Tampa, FL native set career highs in nearly every major category while leading the team in average (.331) triples (4), home runs (15), RBI (65), on-base percentage (.427), and slugging percentage (.552). Bergin was also second on the team in hits (114), doubles (23), and games played (93).

"We are very happy to have David back in our lineup this season," said Canaries manager Chris Paterson. "He was one of the best hitters in the American Association last year, and always seemed to come up in clutch situations for us."

Bergin hit safely in 13 of his final 15 games with the Birds' in 2015. He hit an eye popping .413 (24-for-58) during that stretch while racking up five doubles, three home runs and 13 RBI. His 15 home runs in 2015 were the second most in a single season since hitting 19 round-trippers in 2013.

"We felt we needed to keep Berg's bat in the middle of our order," add Paterson. "He is a professional hitter and great leader for our ball club to build a lineup around."

In five professional seasons, Bergin has posted a .304 batting average while totaling 115 extra base hits and 201 RBI. Prior to joining the Canaries, Bergin spent four minor league seasons with the St Louis Cardinals and Colorado Rockies organizations. Bergin spent most of the 2013 season playing Independent baseball for the United League's Fort Worth Cats, where he hit .310 with 19 home runs, 9 doubles, and 66 RBI in 73 games played.

Bergin and The Canaries begin their 24th season on May 19th against the Sioux City Explorers at Lewis & Clark Park. The Birds kick off the 2016 home portion of their schedule on Friday, May 20th with a special presentation from All-Star Fireworks after the game.
