Recap: Regina Pats 1 vs. Brandon Wheat Kings 2
Regina, Saskatchewan - The Regina Pats (10-9-1-0) made their first visit to Westman Place to matchup with the Brandon Wheat Kings (14-7-0-2). Tyler Brown made 51 saves, but the Pats came up short in a 2-1 loss.
Brandon had the opening four shots of the game, but the Pats got themselves on the board first. On a scramble in front, Taylor Cooper had the puck go off his skate and to the goal line before a Wheat Kings defender inadvertently poked the puck over the line. Tyler Brown did his part to keep the game a 1-0 Pats lead, robbing Tim McGauley on the doorstep. Brandon continued to put rubber toward Brown, who faced 17 shots in the period. One snuck by as Jayce Hawryluk, parked in front, tipped a Colton Waltz point shot past the Pats netminder. The teams came out of the first period tied 1-1.
Brown's stellar play continued into the second frame as he would turn aside 17 of 18 shots. At the other end, Logan Thompson wasn't as busy with eight shots, but still had to face down some great Pats chances. The Wheat Kings marker came directly after a faceoff win. Stelio Mattheos snagged the puck off the draw, slipped around the centres and snapped a shot to the short side. The Pats' best chance came when Colton Kroeker slipped through the defence and pulled the puck to his backhand before Thompson robbed him with the glove. With Brown and Thompson keeping the teams in check, the Pats went to the break, down 2-1.
Both goaltenders came up large in the opening minutes. Thompson kicked it off by stealing a goal away from Adam Brooks with a fantastic glove save. Then right back the other way, Tyler Brown flashed his pad to stone McGauley again and followed it up foiling a tip play in front of the goal. With time winding down and Brown on the bench, the Pats twice foiled Wheat Kings attempts to the empty net. Back in the offensive zone in the final moments, Connor Hobbs wound up on a slap shot, but whistled it wide. The puck rung around to Brooks for an attempt, but his flew just over the net with Thompson down. That would do it as the Pats came up short in a 2-1 loss.
Quick Hits - Connor Hobbs (inj.) and Aaron Macklin (susp.) returned to action after missing five games. - Game attendance was 4011.
What's Next? The Pats stay on the road, but remain in the division tomorrow in Prince Albert. Bennett Dunlop Ford Pats Hockey on 620 CKRM gets going at 6:35 p.m. with puck drop scheduled for 7:00.
