Union Academy Member Auston Trusty Called up to U.S. U-17 National Team for FIFA World Cup

Chester, Pa. (Oct. 1, 2015) - Auston Trusty, a defender for the Philadelphia Union Academy has been called up to U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team, the U.S. Soccer Federation announced today. Head coach Richie Williams named the 21-player roster that will represent the United States at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup, which runs from Oct. 17-Nov. 8 in Chile.

"When I arrived at the Academy in 2013, one of the first boys I was introduced to was Auston," Philadelphia Union Academy Director Tommy Wilson said. "His journey from then to where he is now is one of effort, hope and humility. Representing your country is the ultimate honor and no one deserves it more than Auston. Our entire staff is extremely proud of his achievement and we wish him success at the World Cup."

In the 2014-15 season, Trusty played in 26 games, making 23 starts while scoring four goals. He was an invaluable member of the team and helped lead the squad to a 21-3-2 record and a No. 2 national seed in USSDA Playoffs. He was also a key member in the team's run in the Generation Adidas Cup, where they reached the Champions Division for the first time in academy history.

"We are all delighted for Auston," Union U-16s head coach Jeff Cook said. "This is an outstanding achievement and we are very proud to have a member of the Philadelphia Union representing the United States in the upcoming U-17 World Cup. Auston has worked tremendously hard to earn this opportunity and I have every confidence that he will represent our country with great pride."

The U-17's were drawn into Group A with host Chile, Croatia and Nigeria and open group play against Nigeria on Oct. 17 at 4 p.m. ET in Santiago. The team will then square off with Croatia on Oct. 20 at 4 p.m. ET in Vina Del Mar and Chile on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. ET in Vina Del Mar.

"I think it's a pretty well-rounded roster," Williams said of the overall roster. "When you look over the two-plus years we've been together, we've had the ability to push forward and score goals with a lot of talented attacking players, but also on the defensive end we've had a lot of great games where we've defended well. We were able to play a good amount of international matches and domestic matches, and we hope through all of those experiences we have a really balanced team of 21 players that comes together and gets positive results."

A total of 24 countries participate in the tournament. The top two teams in each group, as well as the best four third-place teams, advance to the Round of 16 on October 28 and 29.

This is the 15th occasion that the USA has advanced to a FIFA World Youth Championship or World Cup at this age group. The USA's best performance was a fourth-place finish at the FIFA U-17 World Youth Championship in 1999 that included wins against Uruguay and Mexico. The U.S. nearly reached the final, falling in a penalty kick shootout to Australia in the semifinal.
