Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA - Using a quartet of Dodgers' rehabbers, Rancho Cucamonga gave its first-half division title hopes a huge boost, clobbering High Desert 9-0 in the series opener at LoanMart Field on Monday night.

The Quakes (37-27) took advantage of erratic Mavericks' starter Reed Garrett (2-1) in the bottom of the first inning. Brandon Trinkwon opened the frame with a leadoff walk. After Dodgers' rehabber Scott Van Slyke lined out to right field, Cody Bellinger and Tyler Ogle drew free passes to load the bases. Paul Hoenecke delivered a sacrifice fly to center field, chasing Trinkwon home for the game's first run. Joey Curletta walked to fill the bases again. Johan Mieses singled to left field, scoring Bellinger. With Austin Chubb batting, a wild pitch by Garrett allowed Ogle to hustle home, making it a 3-0 contest.

High Desert's (33-30) best scoring chance occurred in the top of the first against Dodgers' left-hander Paco Rodriguez, making his first rehab appearance with Rancho Cucamonga. Lewis Brinson opened the game with a triple to left-center field. Seth Spivey's grounder to first resulted in Van Slyke gunning down Brinson at home plate to keep the Mavericks off the board. California League All-Stars Ryan Cordell and Alex Burg each grounded out against Rodriguez to end the threat.

Rancho Cucamonga displayed some power against Garrett in the bottom of the second. Dillon Moyer opened the inning with a single to left. Van Slyke hammered a two-run homer off the left field scoreboard for his first as a Quake. Ogle followed with a solo blast to left-center field for his 11th of the year, giving the home team a 6-0 lead.

The Quakes added to that margin in the fourth. Moyer started things off again with a single. Trinkwon slapped a base-hit to left and Van Slyke singled to left, loading the bases and forcing Garrett's removal from the contest. With left-hander Ryne Slack pitching, Bellinger's single through the right side plated Moyer and Trinkwon. Hoenecke followed with a single to right field, chasing Van Slyke home for a 9-0 cushion.

Quakes' right-hander Jharel Cotton (1-0), the originally scheduled starter, was locked in on the mound. The 23-year-old tossed six scoreless innings, allowing one hit and three walks while striking out six. Cotton has whiffed 15 batters in his last two outings, spanning 13 innings.

Two more Dodgers' rehabbers combined to preserve the win for Rancho Cucamonga. Joel Peralta worked a perfect eighth inning in his third appearance with the Quakes, while right-hander Brandon League pitched a scoreless ninth while allowing a single in his fourth rehab outing. It was the fifth shutout of the year for Quakes' pitching.

With the win and Lancaster's loss to Visalia on Monday, Rancho Cucamonga has reclaimed a two-game lead in the South Division standings, with six games remaining in the first-half of the season. The Quakes' magic number for a division title and a postseason spot now stands at five against the JetHawks.

Rancho Cucamonga will return to action Tuesday in the middle game of the series against High Desert, which now sits three-and-a-half games out of first place. The Quakes are scheduled to start right-hander John Richy (6-2, 4.60 ERA), while the Mavericks counter with righty Trey Lambert (2-1, 5.40 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. If you can't make it to LoanMart Field for this exciting matchup, you can catch all the action on FOX Sports 1350 AM, beginning with the LoanMart Pregame Show at 6:50.
