Chicago Bandits News Release
ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Chicago Bandits have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with infielder Sammy Marshall for the 2015 season per team GM, Aaron M. Moore.
Marshall, who played her collegiate softball at Western Illinois University (WIU) in Macomb was the team's 18th overall selection in the 2015 NPF College Draft, presented by BowNet.
"We are very excited about the signing of Sammy for the 2015 season," said Moore. "We went to this year's draft with a couple of main goals and one of them was to get faster. And with Sammy we have done just that.
"She's going to get a chance to compete for a starting spot somewhere on the field because of her ability to change a game on the base paths."
She was most recently named a First Team All-Summit League selection, the fourth time she received such an honor as a member of the Leathernecks. During the 2015 season, Marshall led her team and was 17th in the nation with a .459 batting average. She also led WIU with 46 runs scored and 61 hits, while leading the Summit League in stolen bases with 26.
The Naperville, Ill. native certainly left her name in the Leatherneck record books. She leaves the University as the all-time leader in batting average (.456), runs scored (166) and stolen bases (134). Twice in her career she was named the Summit League 'Player of the Year', while her efforts this season earned her the honor of the Senior Female Student-Athlete of the Year at WIU.
"It's a dream come true to be able to call myself a professional athlete, especially with an amazing organization like the Bandits," exclaimed Marshall. "I'm incredibly blessed they drafted me last month and I can't wait to continue my career at the next level. Not many people can say they played at the professional level in their sport and I'm very lucky I not only get to say that, but I also get to play in my hometown city.
"Thank you to my parents, past teammates and coaches for helping me get to the position I am now. None of this would have been possible without the love and support from them. "
The first player from the 2015 draft class to sign with their respective NPF team, Marshall will join her Bandits teammates in Rosemont, Ill. for her first official practice on Tuesday, May 19.
Tickets for all 2015 Bandits games, including the home opener on Thursday, June 4 against the Akron Racers, are on sale now. For more information about the Chicago Bandits, or to purchase tickets, visit www.chicagobandits.com.
