Warriors Defeat Spurs in Game 1 of Western Conference Finals

AUSTIN, Texas. - The Santa Cruz Warriors defeated the Austin Spurs 106-95 in Game 1 of the NBA D-League Western Conference Finals on Friday night. Seven different Warriors scored in double-figures to give Santa Cruz the 1-0 edge in the best-of-three series versus the Spurs.

Santa Cruz was paced by Darington Hobson who finished with 20 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 steals. Elliot Williams logged 18 points and 7 assists, while Ognjen Kuzmic notched a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds.

The Spurs received a solid performance from Orlando Johnson who scored 20 points. Kyle Anderson, on assignment from the San Antonio Spurs, notched 18 points and 9 rebounds, while Erik Murphy contributed with 17 points.

Santa Cruz would race ahead behind a 7-0 start in the early minutes of the first quarter, never trailing in the opening frame. The tightly-contested second quarter would see 8 lead changes and 7 ties, with Santa Cruz holding the two-point edge heading into the break.

Elliot Williams would be the offensive spark to start the second half, powering Santa Cruz to an 11-0 run behind his 12 third quarter points. An Armon Johnson bucket would halt the Warriors late third quarter run, but the Warriors would enter the final frame with a 6-point edge.

Santa Cruz would hold onto that lead despite Austin staying within striking distance in the fourth quarter. The Warriors would lead by as many as 12 points in the final frame, finishing with an 11-point margin of victory.

The Santa Cruz Warriors will host the Austin Spurs in Santa Cruz at 5:30p.m. PST at Kaiser Permanente Arena in the second playoff game of the best-of-three series. Fans can listen to the broadcast on the Santa Cruz Warriors flagship station, KION 1460AM/101.1FM, or catch the game on ESPNU.
