Paladin Quartet to March into 'The Swamp'

March 19, 2015 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs are pleased to announce the signing of four players from Furman University in Greenville, S.C.

Sims Griffith, a freshman shortstop; Sky Overton, a sophomore outfielder; Cameron Whitehead, a sophomore catcher; and Nolan Mullen, a sophomore right-handed pitcher will all be suiting up for the 'Dogs this summer.

Griffith, a Gainesville, Ga. native, has been slick with the glove for the Paladins this year, sporting a 1.000 fielding percentage. No stranger to winning, Griffith won three regional championships at Gainesville High School, and looks to bring that pedigree to 'The Swamp' in hopes of capturing the Petitt Cup.

Overton, a speedster from Atlanta, Ga., should be a key cog in the exciting brand of baseball that fans have become accustomed to at J.P. Riddle Stadium. Overton leads the Paladins with eight stolen bases, is third on the team with 14 runs scored and has legged out a triple this season.

Whitehead is a talented backstop from Cincinnati, Ohio, who has been tearing the cover off the ball. He is batting .325 with two doubles and a home run for the Paladins. His handling of the pitching staff is often praised by his coaches and teammates.

Mullen, who hails from Palm City, Fla., rounds out the group. He has made a handful of relief appearances in his first season as a Paladin, striking out two batters in three innings of work.

"I feel all four guys are going to be major contributors this summer," said SwampDogs Manager Zach Brown. "Overton is a hard-nosed outfielder with good speed, Griffith is a young middle infielder who we can count on to be solid every day, Whitehead is a plus defender behind the plate that has the added bonus of being productive offensively, and Mullen is going to be a guy we count on for production out of the bullpen."

The Fayetteville SwampDogs are in their 15th season playing in the Coastal Plain League. The SwampDogs are one of the most successful franchises in the league's history, making the Petitt Cup Playoffs eight times in the past 10 seasons, reaching the championship round three times. The SwampDogs boast 84 alumni taken in the draft and have produced six players who have gone on to play in Major League Baseball. The SwampDogs open their season on Tuesday, May 26th with a 7:05 pm tilt with the Morehead City Marlins at J.P. Riddle Stadium.
